Christmas In Australia

December 17th, 2008

When you think of Christmas, everyone in the Northern Hemisphere dreams of
building snowmen, sledging and toasting chestnuts over a log fire. Not for
Australians however! Christmas in Australia falls in summer and no one can
remember any snow falling on Christmas Day. To the school children, it means
the end of exams and the start of the long summer vacation. The celebrations
are largely dictated by the weather and temperatures can be around 30
degrees Celsius.

The settlers from Great Britain, Ireland and Europe brought their traditions
with them and these included the Christmas dinner, Santa Claus, Christmas
carols and decorated Christmas Trees. In recent decades, many people have
migrated from other parts of the world, particularly from Asia. Diverse
cultures have introduced other traditions to a Christmas in Australia.

A typical dinner for most Australians on Christmas Day will consist of a
turkey, ham or pork with all the trimmings. This is most likely to be
followed by plum pudding and mince pies or a slice of fruit cake. Because of
the warm climate, eating out is very popular and many families like to have
a barbecue at home or a picnic on the beach. People in the Northern
Hemisphere get extremely jealous of their Southern Hemisphere cousins!
Christmas in Australia for thousands of Sydney inhabitants means going down
to Bondi Beach for a bit of dinner and a surf.

Some traditions that other cultures take for granted are not possible down
under. Holly and mistletoe is not available as it’s out of season. This is
not missed though because there is the Christmas Bush, a lovely native plant
with red leaves that Australians buy at this time of year.

Christmas carols are a firm favorite and most cities and larger towns hold a
Christmas Concert. The most traditional of these is the Carols by
Candlelight concert in Melbourne, which has been in existence since 1937.
Thousands of people attend on Christmas Eve. Christmas in Australia for many
people means going to Midnight Mass at their local church. Exiles from Down
Under can get a taste of home by buying CDs of the most popular yuletide
carols and songs sung in Australia. They can also buy a stuffed Koala Bear,
sporting a red Santa hat.

Many people, especially in the UK, like to fly to Australia and spend a
Christmas in Australia with their relatives. The majority of long haul
airlines operate over the Christmas holidays and it’s possible to get
cheaper than normal flights on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Eve.

Chicago Public Libraries

December 17th, 2008

Following the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871, a book donation scheme
was set up in Great Britain and 8,000 books were given in order to stock a
Chicago Public Libraries system. Even Queen Victoria was involved as were
the poets, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Robert Browning.

The success of the scheme helped to restore the public lending idea and the
Chicago Public Library opened to the public in 1873, housed in a converted
iron water tank. An office and a Reading Room were added later. During its
first 24 years of operation, the library moved from location to location.
Today, the library network in the city has 79 branches. This is one of the
world’s largest city library networks.

In 1991, a new central library, the Harold Washington Library Center, opened
its doors. This is the heart of the library system and includes the Thomas
Hughes Children’s Library. The fifth floor of the Harold Washington contains
government publications and many maps. It’s more than a lending library and
it offers other amenities to the community, including music practice rooms
on the eighth floor. The Chicago Public Library also hosts a series of
lectures with no admission on diverse subjects, such as Money, Law and
Authors.

The public expects a high standard of service from today’s libraries, using
the latest technology available. The Chicago Public Library has kept up with
the times and several databases can be accessed. For most of these, it’s not
necessary to go to the library as they can be accessed from home remotely or
from other places with a Chicago Public Library card. All the branches in
the city have a free Wi-Fi Internet connection for use by the public.
Neighborhood branches include Sulzer Regional Library in Lincoln Square and
the Albany Park Branch in North Park. The North Park branch is user friendly
for its cosmopolitan population and has several titles in the Spanish and
Korean languages.

The central library website is a great resource for people that want to
download books in digital form to their computers. Titles are available for
all genres and age groups in fiction and non-fiction. Downloading is made
possible with the library card. The selection also includes Audio Books and
music choices from the world of opera and classical music.

Annual awards are presented in different categories for literary achievement
by the Chicago Public Library and are presented at a fundraising dinner.
They include the 21st Century Award, which goes to authors with a connection
to the city and the Carl Sandburg Literary Award, for which Tom Wolfe is the
recipient for 2008.

Finding Cheap Books

December 17th, 2008

I am an avid reader. I have been known to read a book from front to back in
just a day, provided I actually have some peace and quiet in my household.
My love for books has caused me to buy numerous bookshelves for various
rooms in my house. It didnt take too long for those shelves to be
overflowing. I started to donate books to public libraries and give them
away to family and friends. Before too long, I realized that I was spending
a small fortune by paying full price for these paper or hardback books. You
read them once and then, they sit on a shelf for the rest of their
existence. Why not try to find some cheap books to make my hobby a bit less
of a nuisance to my bank account.

I had always purchased my books through a book club or at a bookstore. Of
course, you pay pretty high prices in those locations, so it was time to
start to look outside the box. I soon discovered that the public library
that I’d been donating books to holds an annual sale for the public. They
would take duplicates off of their shelves or books that were no longer in
demand, and sell them. The first time that I attended the public book sale,
I found so many cheap books that I thought that I had won the lottery. Most
of the books were selling for less than one dollar each. I walked out of
there with dozens and dozens of cheap books. The best part about purchasing
these cheap books was knowing that the proceeds were going right back to the
library.

Another place to find cheap books was at yard sales and auctions. While I
wasnt too keen on attending public auctions, I was a huge fan of yard sales.
A lot of times, people will sell their books for incredibly cheap as well.
Now, if youre not a fan of buying used books or youre looking to get some
books as gifts for others and need for them to be brand new, there are other
ways to find cheap books. You can always find a bargain on ebay. Simply make
sure that the cost of the book plus the cost of shipping isnt more expensive
than purchasing it in a bookstore on your own. Sometimes, you can find cheap
books on amazon.com. Be sure that you?re buying a brand new book though,
because they do sell some used books on their site.

There are lots of ways to get your hands on some cheap books. No matter what
your preference books sales, yard sales or via the internet ? you?re certain
to find yourself part of a wonderful adventure once you find the time to
turn to the very first page.

Choosing The Right Buddha Statues

December 13th, 2008

When most people think of Buddha statues, they picture the laughing Buddha.
After all, anyone who has ever been into a New Age store or a Chinese
restaurant has probably seen one of these Buddha statues. You know the ones
I’m talking about The ones with big bellies, huge grins, and dimples
everywhere. Although these are some of the most adorable Buddha statues,
they are by no means the only ones, nor are they used by all Buddhists.
Nonetheless, they make great good luck charms, souvenirs, and gifts for
friends and family. They are widely to believed to bring good luck,
prosperity, and happiness who doesn’t want those things?

When you are picking out your own statue of Buddha, you should trust your
heart more than any particular set of beliefs. Within Buddhism, there are
hundreds of different currents. Is one better than the rest? Who is to say.
Basically, the point of Buddha statues is to aid in meditation. To that end,
a statue that inspires the appropriate feelings is the right Buddha statue
for you. Do you want a happy, smiling Buddha to help you get in touch with
the joy of inner peace? Do you want a sober, meditative Buddha statue to
help you develop a meditative mind state? Do you want a wrathful Buddhist
deity to help you drive away distractions and speed your way along the path
to enlightenment? By answering these questions, you can pick out the right
statue for you.

You can even for sake Buddha statues altogether in favor of Thangka
paintings or other types of mandalas. Some Buddhists I know even like to
meditate without any visual aids at all. They simply concentrate on their
breath or chants mantras silently to themselves. It is all up to you.

Of course, you don’t have to be a Buddhist to like Buddha statues. You don’t
even have to meditate. I know quite a few collectors who simply enjoy the
way Buddhist artwork looks. Much like the famous sculpture ‘The Thinker’ by
Rodin, the image of the Buddha in his silent contemplation draws us to think
about timeless issues of identity, consciousness, and meaning. These statues
can also be used to create a feeling of calm and peace in a room. You would
be amazed how much the decoration you put up affect the mood of you and your
guests. Buddhism statues can be used to great effect to create the proper
ambiance.
