Learning how to earn extra money

July 31st, 2009

Times are tough. We all know that we’re in the deepest recession in
at least 30 years. Some experts even say it’s the worst it’s been
since the Great Depression of the 1930s. So in these tough economic
times, we all want to know how to earn extra money. Anything to
supplement your salary, or put a little cash away for a vacation later
in the season, or pay down those outrageous credit card debts.

Start by going online and searching “how to earn extra money.”
There’s a fair number of how-to guides out there, but beware of the
ones that charge a fee. Chances are they’ll just be giving you the
same advice you could get from any free guide out there, and your goal
is to learn how to earn extra money, not how to spend money you don’t
have!

Some ideas I found were pretty straightforward: Have a sidewalk sale
to get rid of your old CDs, or old clothes, shoes, etc. In these
tough econonomic times, people are way more willing to buy secondhand
instead of finding something new. By doing this you get to earn extra
money while they get to save a couple of bucks. It’s the free market
doing what the market does best.

If you’re not into garage sales or flea markets of the like, then
maybe try EBay. They wrote the book on how to earn extra money, and
are a global multi-billion dollar company as a result. That old coat
of yours could get you a couple of bucks if you EBay it, as could that
old VCR. Or maybe it’s time to sell that collection of baseball cards
or Beanie Babies. Whatever you’ve got hidden away in your basement or
attic is something that can potentially be turned into cash.

Another step in figuring out how to earn extra money is figuring out
what you’re really motivated to do. Are you willing to take your
Saturday and Sunday mornings and turn them into profit? If so, then
start a local lawn service. Offer to mow lawns, trim hedges, rake
leaves, shovel snow – whatever fits you the best. There’s nothing
wrong with a bit of manual labor, especially if it’s the difference
between making rent that month and not. Or if it’s the difference
between keeping your credit score on the good side of the ledger, an
issue that’s becoming more and more of a concern as banks put the
squeeze on more and more people.

One of the great ways to pick up some extra cash if you’ve got a truck
or a pickup is to perform “Man with a van” services. How to earn
extra money with this? Well, you’ll see this advertised on Craigslist
all the time, especially in cities where few people have cars, and
professional moving services tend to price gouge. Charge whatever you
think is realistic – you can do research on this online – and always
be courteous and diligent. Once you’ve built up a reputation as a
prompt and hard worker, you’d be surprised at how much cash word-of-
mouth can bring in for you. And that is the point, after all, isn’t it?

If you’re not the “man-with-a-van” type, you could consider gardening
and selling your own home-grown fruits and vegetables. Or having a
car wash, or becoming a dog-walker. All of these personal services
are in demand, and finding the one that suits you best shouldn’t be
too hard. Love dogs and exercise? Advertise your services. Grow the
best carrots in the neighborhood? Set up a stand downtown and earn a
couple of bucks.

The opportunities are there. Just make sure you take the time to look
for them!

Great Kids Party Foods

July 31st, 2009

Throwing a party for children of any age is a challenge, and so is
pleasing the parents that bring their children over to your home. You
may already want to supply the children with clean and healthy foods,
but that is not always something that is done. When you want to choose
the best kids party foods, you have to think about nutrition and what
children have to do to eat the foods that you choose. If you think
about those things, you will have a better selection that pleases your
guests and their parents as well.

You should always think about nutrition first when you choose kids
party foods. Though you may want to have sweets, you don?t have to
have all sweets to keep the kids happy. In fact, if you are having a
cake or cupcakes, the rest of your kids party foods can be healthy and
fun for the kids. What you have to decide is what type of healthy
foods do you want to have. You can think about how easy they would be
to make or put together, and even how messy these foods can be. That
may narrow your choices a bit.

Almost all children love fruits. Though some of us do not get enough
of them as we get older, these are great for kids party foods. Because
children still love fruit, a great fruit salad is always a hit. When
you do make one of these, keep to the fruits that most children love.
That would mean you can add bananas, apples, split grapes, and perhaps
some watermelon chucks to make a simple yet yummy fruit salad. That
can be served with a fork and most of the time, even though it is wet,
children will stay clean while eating it.

Not all children love vegetables, but these can be good kids party
foods if you know how to serve them. You will find that there are some
kids that like to have carrot sticks and celery, but not all of them
do. That is when you get out the dips and other additions to go with
them. You can get ranch dip, or you can use peanut butter with the
celery. You can even add raisins for fun. These are common kids party
foods for a good reason: they work.

If you are having a bit of a meal for kids party foods, you may have
to use more than those finger foods above. You want to think about
things like macaroni and cheese. Though this is not always the
healthiest, you can make a healthy version at home that they are going
to like. You can also serve chicken nuggets made of breast meat. You
get the idea. You are going to find that healthy kids party foods are
not going to be that hard, and they are going to be a hit if you think
about what children like and go from there.

Movie Soundtrack

July 31st, 2009

Imagine a film without any music. It feels weird doesn’t it? A lot of
time and effort goes into the movie soundtrack, whether it is
background music or a full-blown score. Music has always been added to
movies, from the silent era to today. Sometimes, a song will become a
hit as part of the publicity for a film, but is only played as the
credits roll and everyone has left the theatre.

Songs have a strong connection to some film scenes, such as the theme
song from Titanic, Iggy Pop’s Lust for Life in Trainspotting or the
standard, As Time Goes By from Casablanca. Movie soundtrack albums are
another moneymaking opportunity. Audiences who have loved the film
want the songs to remind them of the experience. Of course, in the
case of musicals, the songs are the experience. The music in The Sound
of Music and West Side Story tells the story with each song moving the
narrative along. Sometimes, the actor or actress isn’t up to the task
of singing and a singer dubs their parts. Natalie Wood in West Side
Story and Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady were both dubbed.

Film music is used to evoke certain emotions, such as sadness,
tension, fear, romance or excitement. The sounds are carefully chosen
for the effect as the wrong selection can completely alter a scene.
Everyone knew something unpleasant was coming when the violins started
to screech in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. Some musical effects are
calling cards for the appearance of a character, as in Jaws whenever
the shark comes along. The movie soundtrack may not have a conscious
impact on the audience but the film would not work if it were taken
away. It’s an international language and understood by anyone from
anywhere who has heard the chase music from a Keystone Cops film.

Film directors and film composers work closely together to produce a
creative collaboration. Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the
Rings trilogy, was much involved with the musical choices for each
scene. There are the playful tunes of the Shire, home of the Hobbits
and the dark, menacing music of the Orcs. A movie soundtrack for a
movie franchise usually has key phrases running through it, as in the
James Bond score or the Superman films. The similarities in the music
give the series a sense of continuity. The music for a film is as
important as the editing, cinematography or script.

Exciting and Affordable Mountain Bike Holidays

July 31st, 2009

While some people might consider lounging in a beach chair with an
umbrella drink in hand the perfect way to spend a vacation, “slow” has
never been my speed at all. I’d much rather spend my off days biking
up and down rocky terrain or twisting, turning trails while taking in
incredible views along the way. That’s why I’ve been booking mountain
bike holidays for the past five years, and why I’ll continue to do so
every chance I get.

Since I’ve taken so many mountain bike holidays already, all my
buddies come directly to me when they need some tips on how to book a
once-in-a-lifetime adventure of their own. I’m more than willing to
share my expertise, and am proud to say that I’ve hooked more than a
few friends up with vacations they’ll never forget. The key to a great
mountain bike holiday is to know exactly what YOU want from your trip
before you make any reservations. Don’t book the same vacation as
someone else just because that person had a blast. Everyone’s tastes
and experience levels vary, so you need to start by answering a few
questions first.

For example, one thing I always ask is how much you’re willing to
spend on your vacation. There are cheap mountain bike holidays as well
as luxurious ones, but of course the packages are wildly different
depending on how much you’re willing to spend. You can definitely have
a terrific adventure on small budget, so I recommend spending only as
much money as you’re comfortable with. There’s certainly no need to go
into debt here!

A second question I ask is what kind of experience level the person
has. Beginners will not have the same success on tough mountains as
their advanced counterparts, and of course easy mountains won’t be any
fun for the experts. It’s important to assess your skills honestly
here, as safety also comes into play. You don’t want to ride over your
head and end up with a serious injury during what was supposed to be a
dream vacation.

And finally, I ask what general area the person would like to visit
for their trip. Popular mountain bike holidays in the U.S. usually
include destinations like Colorado, California, Oregon, and Arizona in
the West, and North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee in the East. But
there are also incredible international mountain bike holidays
available too, in exotic locales such as Canada, Costa Rica, the
Scottish Highlands, and the French Alps. All of these places have
something unique to offer, so you really can’t go wrong no matter
where you end up riding.

Once you’ve answered these questions, then finding cheap mountain bike
holidays online or through a local travel agent should be a snap. Have
fun, ride hard, and be safe!

Why I like pillowtop mattresses

July 31st, 2009

My girlfriend is completely obsessed with pillowtop mattresses ever
since we stayed in a hotel with one a few months ago. It was the first
time she had ever slept on a pillowtop mattress, you see, although
even then she seemed interested in them. She had heard a lot about how
soft pillow top mattresses were. She is kind of a snob about beds. She
likes beds that are soft and comfortable, yet don’t sag in the middle.
These mattresses have to be extremely high quality. It is easy to find
a nice firm mattress that doesn’t sag, or a nice soft one that does,
but pillowtop mattresses ? at least the high quality ones ? manage to
combine both of these qualities.

I am in a much different position. In some ways, I like pillowtop
mattresses, but some nights I can not sleep on something so soft. They
are wonderful to lie on and relax, but they are not always the best
sleeping places. I feel a little bit disoriented when I am on
pillowtop mattresses all night, you see. I have no idea where the edge
of the bed is, and sometimes I wake up not knowing where I am. It is
almost like I can’t let go and completely sink into that much comfort.
Don’t get me wrong ? I love lying on a pillowtop mattress. It is just
that sometimes it makes it hard for me to get to sleep.

That is why I have become so interested in memory foam mattresses
lately. I am sure that it will become a fight when we begin to look
for our own new mattress, but I have developed a very different taste
in mattresses than she has. The thing that I like about memory foam
mattresses as opposed to pillowtop mattresses is that they seem to
conform more to your individual body. Rather than sagging shapelessly,
they support you just in those key positions where you need support,
while relaxing so as not to give you pressure points.

Still, I can’t deny her assertion that pillowtop mattresses are the
most comfortable the world. Pillow top queen-size mattresses are like
nothing else I have ever slept on. Even if I go to sleep with dozens
and dozens of aches in my body, I will wake up without a single one.
Honestly, no matter what kind of mattress we choose, I’m sure it will
be better than the one we’re sleeping on now!

Choosing Quit Smoking Programs That Work For You

July 31st, 2009

Smokers know that smoking is bad for them. Smoking feels good, and is
relaxing for most people, so it makes it hard to quit, even when
knowing that this is bad for us and is going to take years off of our
lives. That being said, when quitting, it is important to choose the
best of the quit smoking programs out there. Some work better for some
people than others. You have to think about your own life and your
lifestyle when you choose the program that you want to use to quit
smoking method that is going to work the best in your life.

There are some great quit smoking programs out there. One of the
newest is the pill that you take for a while. You take it for so many
days or weeks after you have chosen a date to quit. With the pill in
your system, it makes quitting on that day much easier than otherwise
just stopping and hoping for the best. I know quite a few people who
have chosen this as their method among the many quit smoking programs
out there. It has worked well for them and they recommend it highly to
anyone who wants to stop smoking.

You can also get patches or gum as a part of your quit smoking
programs. These replace the nicotine that you are going to lose when
you quit smoking. Through the act of smoking is a part of the
addiction, the nicotine is what you have a problem giving up the most.
The body wants it, and that leads it to urge you to smoke. If you
slowly wean from the nicotine through quit smoking programs, you are
going to have better luck. Cold turkey is not always the way to go,
though it does seem as if it is the easiest and cheapest. Without
replacement nicotine, stopping is very hard indeed.

You can also use hypnosis as one of the more powerful quit smoking
programs out there. Though it might sound a little off the wall, it
does work for some people. I have a friend who went through this, and
it worked for her for quite a while. She did end up smoking again, but
only has a few now and again. The quit smoking programs that include
hypnosis work on a subconscious level. When you do this, you come out
of it feeling disgusted when you see or smell a cigarette (by
suggestion through hypnosis). It can be very powerful for the right
person.

No matter which of the stop smoking programs one would choose, there
is another component that must be included. Support and advice is what
is going to make the program complete. Some states have quit lines
that offer both of those things. You can also turn to friends and
family to help you through the moments when you must have a cigarette.
They are going to do all they can so that you can live longer. Don?t
leave this critical part out of your quit smoking programs, or you are
probably going to fail.

What do Sports Agents even do?

July 31st, 2009

The world of sports is a very intense place in America. Millions and
billions of dollars are at stake on what is ultimately a game. On the
surface, things look simple, but a deeper look at the sports world
reveals that there thousands of people besides the players and coaches
that make up the sports world and that without them, sports as we know
it wouldn’t exist. One of the more notable groups of people are sports
agents.

Sports agents represent players and help them negotiate the best
contract for them. This is much more important than it seems. In fact,
it’s also much newer than it seems. Sports agents haven’t always been
around. Years ago, the team owners believed that players were more or
less commodities, that they bought and sold and traded. A player would
be drafted to a team and, unless they were traded, would stay with
that team their whole career. The idea of free agency, or the ability
of a player to choose what team he or she plays for, has only been
around for forty years or so. If a player thought he was paid or
treated unfairly, well, too bad. Could you imagine if you weren’t
allowed to quit and work for another company in the same field? This
was the plight of athletes until free agency came around.

Once players could become free agents, they had a new problem on their
hands. Many of them were undereducated and had little business or
legal knowledge, and had a difficult time negotiating fair contracts,
even with the teams of their choosing. Sports agents were able to step
in to help with that. These sports agents work with the general
manager to negotiate, argue, debate and ultimately decide on a
contract for all involved.

Sports agents have evolved a lot since then. Sports agents serve
athletes in all different ways. Sports agents arrange for many of
their publicity and sponsorship deals. Sports agents arrange help with
legal and financial issues for the athletes. Sports agents also act as
advisors and mentors, helping athletes maintain good relationships
with the press, their fans, their teammates and the front office of an
organization. Many people see sports agents as bad for the sport,
because they were so good at negotiating that many of today’s athletes
seem grossly overpaid to the average fan. But sports agents are a big
reason why the sports world today works so well, and people all over
the globe enjoy it so much.

Why you have trouble sleeping and what you can do about it

July 31st, 2009

If you frequently have trouble sleeping, you share a problem with
millions of other people. There are health conditions which can
contribute to this bothersome syndrome. Stress and anxiety can play a
significant role in having trouble sleeping. People who work night
shifts are often plagued with inadequate sleep, because they can’t
seem to sleep in the daytime. Lack of exercise can leave you mentally
overloaded, with your body awake and your mind racing. Any or all of
these factors can cause you to have trouble sleeping. Let’s take a
look at each, in turn.

People with chronic pain, diabetes, Restless Leg syndrome and sleep
apnea often are kept awake due to the discomfort of their condition.
Many of these patients turn into virtual ‘night people’, occupying
their minds with television or reading to get their mind off the
irritation, then spend their days feeling dragged out. This becomes a
vicious cycle, eventually disrupting your Circadian rhythms, turning
your trouble sleeping into an inability to sleep a single restful
night. Here are a few suggestions that may help.

For chronic conditions, be sure you take your medications without
fail! People with chronic conditions are prone to develop a ‘this
won’t ever get better anyway’ attitude, causing them to become lax
about taking medications intended to alleviate the symptoms which are
keeping you awake. Ask your doctor to test you for vitamin
deficiencies. If you have trouble sleeping every night, talk to your
doctor about the short-term use of a sleeping pill. You may be able to
readjust your sleeping patterns in just a couple of weeks.

If stress and anxiety seem to be the major factors, this situation is
far easier to turn around. Immediately begin a regular program of
daily exercise. The only requirement is that the exercise you choose
exceeds your normal daily activity. This raises your metabolic rate,
causing you to burn energy. Try to exercise sufficiently such that
your muscles feel like you got a workout. You’ll have less trouble
sleeping when your body is saying ?Yes!? to sleep. Avoid caffeine
after 3pm. Many people are still responding to the stimulation eight
hours later! Take a hot bath before bedtime and tuck yourself in with
a cup of herbal tea or warm milk.

Those of you who work a night shift have your natural Circadian
rhythms thoroughly disrupted. Vitamin D3 plays an important role in
regulating your sleep. If you have a daytime sleeping schedule, you
are probably deficient in this nutrient, as sunlight is where you get
your vitamin D. If you work the graveyard shift, you’re exposed to
light as soon as you leave work. This is a wakeup call to your body.
Some people are highly sensitive to the energizing rays of sunlight,
and by the time they arrive home, it’s next to impossible to sleep.
During the morning hours, get out in the sunlight for just 15 minutes
and do housework or other errands right after work. Get some physical
activity into your schedule. If possible, try to get your sleep late
in the afternoon. Darken your bedroom to encourage that feeling of
night time. Work in the suggestions given for stress and anxiety. You
can turn your situation around.

For those nights when nothing seems to work, try this simple
technique. Turn off the lights and the television. Close your eyes and
mentally count back from 200, by threes. You’ll get so bored and
become so disinterested in this endeavor, your mind will say, ?Enough!
? sending you to sleep.

You can say good-bye to your trouble sleeping, sooner than you’d
suppose.

Create visual illusions in your wardrobe: highlight your assets and

July 31st, 2009

Whether they’re real or imagined, just about every woman tends to
magnify what they consider to be less than perfect body proportions.
You may think your waistline is too big, your legs too short or your
bust too small ? or too big. Whatever these problem features may be,
there are ways to create visual illusions in your wardrobe selections
that make the most of your assets and downplay the flaws. You can use
various cuts in clothing styles, color and design patterns to make you
look and feel your best. Let’s look at how to tackle all of these
problems.

Let’s say you feel the lower portion of your body is too large in
comparison to your torso. Dark colors make you look thinner. Choosing
a dark color for a skirt or pants has a slimming effect. Team this up
with a light colored blouse with a ruffled neckline or sweater with a
large collar to create a visual illusion that flatters your figure.

Cap sleeves deemphasize thin upper arms, creating a visual illusion of
more weight at the top of your arms. On the other hand, if your upper
arm is substantial, you can minimize this feature with loose-fitting
long or three-quarter length sleeves.

If you have heavy thighs, go for more loosely cut pant styles ? the
bell bottom or ‘harem’ styles are good choices. Darker shades and
fabrics that flow, such as silk make for a graceful visual illusion
you’ll love. Avoid tight-fitting pants, which tend to emphasize any
extra weight.

If you feel you just plain need to lose some weight all over,
horizontal stripes and large pattern designs will only emphasize this
flaw. On the other hand, small, diagonal stripes are slimming,
especially in dresses which are cut on the bias.

Probably every woman feels her waistline is too big! There’s always
room for improvement here. Whether this is actually the case or you
just think so, use visual illusions to give you the look you want.
Look for dropped waist skirts which describe a v-shape towards the
center. This draws the eye towards the smaller profile and away from
the waist. Empire waist dresses with a bias cut skirt portion also do
the trick.

Short legs can be made to look longer with this visual illusion: a
midi length pencil style skirt with dark sheer stockings and platforms
will make you look like a model!

A small busted woman can go in for any bulky sweater. Remember that
bright colors increase the apparent size of any part of your body.
Shirts with flouncy ruffles are also winners. For casual wear, bright,
large patterns, such as the popular Hawaiian shirts will visually fill
out your bust line. Worn with dark pants in a slim cut boosts the
effect of this visual illusion.

On the other hand, if you think Mother Nature was a bit generous in
this department, darker colors are your best wardrobe friend in tops.
Here again, narrow diagonal stripes will help you visually downplay a
large bust.

Creating visual illusions with your wardrobe can be a real confidence
builder. It’s likely that you think the problem is much more severe
than it really is. However, what counts is how you feel about your
appearance, so make the most of it!

Tips For Beginner Photography

July 30th, 2009

There are many hobbies from which you can choose. The best part is
that there are no rules when you choose, and you can do whatever your
budget will allow you to do. One of the most common types of hobbies
that many choose is photography. Some go to college to learn how to
make the most of a camera, but you don?t have to do that to take some
really great shots. If you take your time with beginner photography,
you will lay a foundation for exceptional picture taking talent.
Learning the basics is the base that everyone needs in any endeavor,
and this is no exception.

When you start beginner photography, you may want to get reference
material that explains how a camera works, and what most need to know
about light, focus, and distance. There are various settings on a
camera, and the manual ones are the ones that take the best shots.
Auto setting works well for many, but for those truly artistic and
breath-taking photos, you have to know what all the settings on the
manual camera really do. Beginner photography should also be about
this first and foremost.

The next step in photography for beginners is to find the perfect
camera. Some of them are very expensive, and this is for a very good
reason. However, you can find a great camera no matter what your
budget, but you do have to be aware that some of the lower end ones
have their limitations, and many not have the longevity of some of the
pricier models. For beginner photography, however, you should worry
more about the basics than the bells and whistles. You also have to
decide if you want digital or film, or perhaps one of both.

If you don?t want to take classes for beginner photography, you can
teach yourself. You can find many great books that will show you what
you need to know about lighting, F stops, and even about framing a
shot properly. Those are all essential for truly great photos. You may
also find online courses for beginner photography that you can go
through at your own pace and when you have the time. Photography for
beginners as a hobby should be fun, not stressful. That is why
learning at your own pace is the best way to go. Before you know it,
you will have a fun hobby that gives you the creative outlet that you
need.
