New York City Tourism

Visitors going to the Big Apple have a lot of attractions to choose from. New York City tourism offers such variety and value for money. There are landmark buildings, terrific museums and galleries, world class dining, and cultural events. In addition to the sightseeing, you can take in a baseball game, go to a Broadway show, attend a concert in Carnegie Hall or simply enjoy a picnic in Central Park.

The Empire State Building is one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The Art Deco design was completed in 1931 and was the tallest building in the world until 1972 when the World Trade Center’s North Tower opened. After the collapse of the Twin Towers, it is once again the tallest building in New York City. There is an observational deck on the 86th floor and one with public access on the 102nd floor. It is a 102-story building and it dominates the skyline. Nighttime is a good time to see it, when it is floodlit, particularly at Christmas time when red and green lights are used.

The Chrysler Building on 42nd Street is another fine example of Art Deco architecture. It was finished in 1930 and is still the tallest brick building in the world. Probably, the most famous structure for New York City tourism is the Statue of Liberty. She has been welcoming travelers into New York Harbor since France gave her as a gift in1886.

In the midst of the metropolis, there is a haven of landscaped grounds and water features. Central Park is where people meet, have their lunch, throw a Frisbee, roller blade or relax with a book. Tourism, New York City style can be a bit hectic, so it’s good to wind down sometimes. There are tracks for running and for walking, lakes, ponds, a reservoir, and two ice skating rinks. Visitors can also enjoy the zoo and the Conservatory Garden wildlife sanctuary, and the woods. Summertime is a good time to visit to catch the Shakespeare in the Park festival in the outdoor Delacorte Theater. There are plenty of activities for the children too, such as puppet shows and carousels. Couples taking romantic rides with the carriage horses are a familiar sight.

The city is also known for its museums where many valuable collections are kept. There is something for the lover of contemporary work and for those more interested in tradition. The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue has a collection of painting and sculpture through the ages, from the United States and Europe, including the Old Masters, Rembrandt and Vermeer. There are also displays of rooms furnished in different period styles, arms and armour, musical instruments, costumes, photography, and Egyptian art. The Guggenheim Museum, also on Fifth Avenue, is famous for the architecture of its building as well as its collection of contemporary art.
