Stained Glass Lamps
Stained Glass Lamps
I have always had a special weakness for stained glass lamps. You see, I like anything that glows, sparkles, or shines. The problem is that a lot of glowing stuff is not really seen as good taste for an adult. Putting lava lamps in your living room is seen as vaguely ridiculous unless you are some sort of seventies nut or college student, and colored light bulbs distort the appearance of artwork and make it hard to read.
That is why I like stained glass lamps so much. They allow me to indulge my fancy for colorful, glowing things without compromising on practicality. The stained glass floor lamp in the corner of the room may have red, purple, green, and yellow squares in it, but it still provides enough white light to light the room well. The same thing goes for the overhead lamps, table lamps, and other stained glass lighting.
Most people who like stained glass lamps are really partial to one look or another. There are some folks who are really in to abstract designs. These stained glass lamps are more common, although not always less expensive. Tiffany table lamps, for example, have elegant geometrical patterns made out of different pieces of colored glass. They are interesting and easy on the eye. They do not draw too much attention, but they are neat to look at when you notice them.
There are other people out there who have much more ornamental taste in stained glass lamps. They like lamps with humans and animals hidden amid the swirls and polygons of colors. These neoclassical designs hearken back to an older age with more elaborate aesthetics.
Unlike most people who have a strong preference for one style, I have always sort of liked both. On the one hand, I really like the way that modern stained glass lamps seem to reduce design to its barest elements. Color and composition alone can be used artfully to create a flawless piece fit to grace the classiest living room. No story needs to be told. The proportion and taste of the artist is enough. On the other hand, I do love myth. The more elaborate and ornamental stained glass lights seem to evoke the glass work of the great cathedrals of the world. They have such a deep, resonant, and serious look about them. I can not help but appreciate it in all its somber beauty.
