We have been enjoying some rather nice weather lately. When the weather is nice, I have a habit of sitting in one of the windows in my living room and staring out into my backyard. My daughter often sits there, and I have to occasionally remind her to close the screen to keep the bugs out, as well as keeping herself in. What I didn?t know is that she is sneakier than I thought she was. I just noticed that she was pulling up the roof tiles that are right below our second story window.

What I didn?t know is that she is sneakier than I thought she was. I just noticed that she was pulling up the roof tiles that are right below our second story window.
I don?t know a lot about roof tiles, but I understand how they work. My husband works in construction, and he often answers any questions I have. I tend to have a lot of questions because I get curious about the oddest things. One day we were talking about roof tiles because I wasn?t quite sure how they worked. It seemed to me that a seamless roof might be better than tiles to keep the water out. He then explained why the tiles seem to work so much better and why they are used almost exclusively in home building.
He said if the base of the roof is properly sealed, the roof tiles then allow the water to cascade down the roof without giving it much time to get underneath to look for a way in. They must be put on properly or they won?t work. There is a reason why roofers often start at the bottom of the roof and work upwards, with the upper most roof tiles being the last that are laid down. I guess that makes a lot of sense. He also said that though there are many different materials, they all tend to work the same, but there are certain benefits to certain types. Sometimes, they are chosen for looks more than function.
I also learned that roof tiles are essentially meant to work together. That means if one is missing, the others around it may be fine, but when two or three in the same spot disappear or are damaged, leaks may form under that spot. We don?t own the house we are living in, but he makes sure he checks some of the roof tiles after a particularly nasty storm to be sure there is no damage. After all, we may not own the house, but we do live in it, and our belongings are protected by those tiles.
