Psychic abilities and other centuries-old unexplained phenomena: real or quackery?

Psychic abilities and other centuries-old unexplained phenomena: real or quackery?

Many distinguished scholars hold that everyone has psychic abilities, in varying degrees, early in life, but that these abilities generally disappear by the time a child is six or seven. Skeptics tend to dismiss such contentions as so much quackery. Part of the problem is that this phenomena cannot be scientifically proven and that there are far more skeptics than psychics. Another obstacle consists in the fakes, people who advertise in tabloid magazines, ‘psychic guarantees return of your lost love in 24 hours’ or some other such ridiculous premise.

In fact, people who do have psychic abilities, tend to experience them outside of a clinical setting, which makes the experience and report purely anecdotal, that is, lacking in quantifiable, scientifically repeatable proof. However, this does not negate the phenomena. It simply remains unproven.

Various studies have shown that psychic ability seems to run in families. In retrospect, anecdotal reports of ‘knowing’ future events does tend to repeat down through generations. Sometimes, the knowledge is fairly insignificant and not traumatic. In other instances, people have knowledge of traumatic events prior to the occurrence. One such famous case is that of Jeanne Dixon, who predicted the circumstances and time of President Kennedy’s assassination. Ms. Dixon went to great lengths to try to warn the Kennedy’s, with details that so closely matched the actual event, it was truly inexplicable. Her desperate pleas went unheeded and history records the outcome. In this instance, it’s certainly hard to explain how she could have known about this disastrous event.

It’s interesting to note that most religions acknowledge visions as a legitimate extension of psychic ability. There is a definite correlation between these two unexplained phenomena. In some senses, what’s currently termed ‘psychic ability’, was, centuries ago, deemed ‘visions’. In the Catholic church, well known visionaries, such as Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross and Catherine of Siena, experienced visions of both future and revelatory events which have survived the centuries. The church decided that it could not discount these contemplative, meditative souls, but neither could they endorse this psychic phenomena as truth for the ordinary believer. The church instead deemed these people, with what we now call psychic abilities, or visions, to be ‘Doctors of the Church’. This provided a special, separate category, into which the ordinary person could not and should not, enter.

If you were to ask a person who claimed psychic abilities just how they apprehended this knowledge, chances are that they might not be able to tell you if they were dreaming or awake! The knowledge is understood and irrefutable. It might come in the form of a thought, a dream, or a visual representation while awake. This reportage is not credible to most people. It’s simply too difficult to understand. For example, if you’d never seen snow, how could you believe a description of it? However, this obviously does not mean snow does not exist.

Perhaps psychic ability will forever remain a mystery. It’s possible that some people are able to apprehend a different plane of reality than most of us are capable of seeing.

The fascinating aspect of the psychic phenomena is that countless scholars have verified, in clinical settings, that almost all children have psychic ability, to a degree and up to a certain age. The fact that this ability almost always fades as a child matures may be only a result of anchoring in the world most of us see as reality. Who can say?

Free Fruit Smoothie Recipes Online

I haven’t always paid as much attention to my health as I should. There are frequent stretches of time where I stop going to the gym, eat too many meals at fast food restaurants, and don’t get enough sleep. Sure, I have excuses, such as work and family commitments that prevent me from sticking to any kind of steady workout regimen or diet, but in the end these are still just excuses. Well, now I’m ready to make my health a priority again, and I’m starting by hitting the gym and collecting as many fruit smoothie recipes as I can find.

Why the sudden interest in fruit smoothie recipes? After examining my eating habits, I discovered that most of my trips to McDonald’s and Burger King were the result not of an intense desire to pig out on burgers and fries, but by a lack of time to prepare a proper meal. This was especially true after a late night at work. On the drive home, I was simply too exhausted to even think of cooking real food for dinner, so I would just stop off for a quick bite. But I figure if I learn how to make good smoothies, I can whip those up as a meal substitute or as a healthy snack to tide me over until I cook dinner.

I don’t know the first thing about making smoothies, but fortunately there are lots of websites where I can get free fruit smoothie recipes. I’ve already checked out a handful of these sites, and really liked what I saw. For one thing, it seems that smoothies are very quick and easy to make. That’s a definite plus for me, as I’ve already explained. For another thing, there are just so many different fruit smoothie recipes to choose from that I’ll never get tired of them! From your basics like banana, strawberry, and pineapple to more exotic ones like raspberry chocolate and eggnog, I’ll be able to quench my thirst and satisfy my stomach no matter what I’m craving.

Not all the fruit smoothie recipes I’ve seen are low-calorie or healthy in the strictest sense of the word, so I’ll have to pay attention to the ingredients list to make sure I don’t sabotage my diet. But it should be pretty easy to make substitutions or eliminate completely unhealthy additions to the recipe and still come out with something palatable.

Overall, I’m looking forward to trying out some of the free fruit smoothie recipes that I’ve found online. Hopefully this will be just what I need to get back on the right track as far as healthy eating habits go. Then I can concentrate on getting my workouts back up to speed, and eventually I’ll look and feel much better!

Laser eye correction surgery

Laser eye correction surgery

Laser eye correction surgery is something I’d considered for myself for a long, long time. Laser eye correction surgery, or “Lasik,” as it’s called, has been around for fifteen years or more. It’s designed to correct the sight of people who suffer from nearsightedness or farsightedness, as well as astigmatism as long as it’s not too severe.

The ultimate goal, of course, is to ditch your glasses or contact lenses. I’ve worn either since I was ten years old, and while it’s not a great trial to deal with them on a daily basis, it is a small irritation that I’d as soon do without. Little things – the two minutes to put your contacts in in the morning, the two minutes to take them out, the few hundred dollars a year you spend on eyewear and treatment – all add up, and make laser eye correction surgery a highly appealing procedure.

A few friends of mine have had laser eye correction surgery, and to a person they’re all happy with the results. One, a journalist, was far-sighted and had his procedure done ten years ago. He hasn’t had any complications at all despite being in an industry where he’s constantly staring at backlit screens of the type that even people with normal eyesight find straining. Another friend, who was near-sighted, had laser eye correction surgery as well, and she’s an avid reader. Like my journalist friend, she’s had no complications of any sort and it’s been better than half a decade for her. As I said, that makes me consider having the procedure done myself.

The history of Lasik is short, as you’d expect it to be given how sensitive the eyes are and the crudeness of anaesthetics and surgical instruments before the past couple of decades. The first patent for LASIK, for example, was only granted in 1989. It was called a “method for modifying corneal curvature,” and that remains its essential definition to this very day.

Post-operative care is fairly simple and straight-forward. You’re ordered to sleep much more than you would normally; your eyes are more likely to heal healthy and quickly if you don’t strain them with too much use and too much light. You’re also ordered to wear protective sunglasses for several weeks afterward when you are awake, in order to shield the retina and allow the corneal flaps to heal without complication. And of course there are moisturizing drops necessary in order to prevent your eyes from chafing.

Complications from laser eye correction surgery tend to be rare, but they do occur, as is the case with all types of surgery. However, because the eyes are so sensitive, it’s recommended that any discomfort or unusual responses should be noted and brought to your doctor’s attention if you do have laser eye correction surgery.

X Men Animated Series

X Men Animated Series

The X Men animated series first aired in the early 90s, but since then newer versions of the X Men animated series such as X Men Evolution and Wolverine and the X Men have aired in the 21st century. All of the X Men series are based off of the popular Marvel superhero team which has also provided inspiration for the X Men movie franchise and the X Men action figure lines. Long after their conception, the X Men continue to fascinate the public, providing entertainment as well as provoking thoughtful debate over the idea of mutants and how it relates to real life society.

The underlying theme of X Men animated series is the idea of training individuals with mutant powers to use them for good and to benefit humanity. However, the journey is difficult as mutants first have to deal with the shock of possessing mutant powers, and then they have to deal with the consequences of their abilities. People without mutant abilities don?t understand them and even show prejudice and discriminate against them for who they are. At the same time, they?re fighting on behalf of the people who reject them, though often the adversaries are other mutants who use their powers for malevolent means. These mutant ?bad guys? often see themselves as superior to normal people because of the abilities they possess and while this belief seems misguided, the ?good? mutants struggle with the fact that they have a point. In a way, they?re gifted in a way that other people are not, and the only reason it feels like a curse is because they?re rejected for being different.

X Men brings up the issue of conformity and more abstractly, the nature of humanity. People often fear and reject things that they?re not used to just because they unfamiliar. This has a series of consequences that range from simple to serious. This kind of fear could be responsible for not trying out rock climbing, or it could also be responsible for discriminating against other races. The issue of whether mutants should be ?cured? has been said to have a parallel with genetic engineering and gay rights. Is it ethical to take control of biological destiny, and should people have to change to be accepted by society?s rules.

The metaphor isn?t perfect because after all, X Men is still a fantasy. As far as we know, mutations haven?t provided people with superpowers and such a diverse lot of them at that, with there happening to be someone who can control fire, someone who controls ice, someone who can use telekinesis, someone who shoots lasers, and so on?it drips of human wish fulfillment and imagination. Nevertheless, even if the X Men animated series is just a cartoon, it addresses concepts that have real life implications that are worth thinking about.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels

Ahh, to look young and vibrant again. This is what so many people crave once they hit their mid-life. Luckily there are plenty of ways to achieve this state of youth in this day and age. Or at least take a few years off your complexion and body. One of the commonly heard of methods is called chemical peels. This is one way to exfoliate layers of dead skin off your face. The results are supposed to be incredible, but what exactly do you truly know about this cosmetic procedure.

I have heard many things about modern chemical peels. Unfortunately most of them are bad reviews. I did have the pleasure of seeing a woman one day in a local spa, immediately after she received a chemical peel. I was waiting in the lobby area for a massage treatment, and she just strolled out. I knew immediately that she had indulged in a chemical peel treatment. Her bright red complexion clued me in. Plus there was the fact that she stepped up to the counter and the employee asked her about the chemical peel. I recall the employee telling her to avoid sunlight and certain facial cleansing products for a certain number of days. I will admit, just looking at that results of that chemical peel turned me off. That woman looked like she went bobbing for apples in a volcano. OUCH! Anyway, the moral of this story is there are other options available besides chemical peels. To name one of the more popular ones, microderm abrasion. This is also an exfoliating process that removes dead skin with sand particles. A device blows them on small portions of your face at a time. It’s sort of like a face scrub, but more effective.

You’ll notice that far less dermatologists recommend chemical peels now days. The results are just a bit too extreme and it’s hard on the complexion to remove so much at one time; with chemicals on top of that. More and more, spas and dermatology clinics are recommending microderm abrasion as a less irritating alternative. However, your microderm abrasion process might take more than one visit. Some folks go up to six consecutive times, depending on their condition and goals. If you’re looking to minimize scaring, the process will take longer and cost more.

Got furniture shopping in mind? Get some real bargains after the holidays, right through March!

Got furniture shopping in mind? Get some real bargains after the holidays, right through March!

For most of us, new furniture is a major, long term investment. If your favorite armchair, or the living room sofa has seen better days, you might be thinking of going furniture shopping, but your budget doesn’t agree! In better economic times, you and your spouse might have decided to give each other that new sofa or armchair as a holiday gift. These days, that may no longer be an option. Why? Too much money, of course. So here’s a way to go furniture shopping and get the very best price.

Most economists are predicting another bad holiday shopping season for retailers, across the board. This makes it likely that you’ll see some deeply discounted prices, particularly on some of the bigger ticket items, including furniture. However, if you exercise some patience, you can pick up some fabulous bargains after the holidays. You probably don’t need to worry too much about finding just what you’re looking for, due to much reduced inventory.

One of the best times to go furniture shopping is right after the New Year. Hungry retailers are going to reduce those drop dead prices even further, hoping to entice savvy shoppers – like you. If you’ve got your eye on a piece of furniture that’s on sale at 50% off during the holiday season, don’t be surprised if it’s sitting there after New Year’s, priced at 60% off. Let’s say you’re looking for a new sofa which retails for $1500. At 50% off, it’s yours for $750. At 60% off, you pay just $600. That kind of deal brings a smile to anyone’s face. You get a quality sofa without busting the budget. Just think, for that extra $150 savings, you can probably find a lovely new lamp for the end table. If you stick with the sofa alone, it’s certain you can put that $150 to good use elsewhere. ;) !

Now, another great time to go furniture shopping is during the month of March. Why? Most businesses must pay taxes on all of their inventory still on the premises or in their warehouse on March 31st. This means they are anxious to sell as much of that inventory to avoid having to pay that tax. Another factor that figures in to the March sales: taking inventory is a costly proposition to the retailer, as it must be done in a short period of time, requiring extra staff to complete an accurate inventory on time.

So, you’ll find some great deals during the month of March. If you file your taxes early and have a refund coming, this can be the absolute perfect time to go furniture shopping. Remember, cash talks. You may even be able to negotiate a price that’s lower than the advertised sales price. This is one of the times when price haggling is de rigeur. The sales person only needs to get approval from his or her manager.

You might have thought that there was no way to get that new furniture, but, as you can see, there are some great opportunities in the world of furniture shopping coming right up!

Millions of people make the decision to learn a martial art or take some kind of self-defense course. This is a wonderful thing. It’s called “not being delusional.” Those who seek empty-hand combat instruction are aware that they might very well need it one day. Hopefully they won’t; but you simply never know what the future has in store for you. Therefore you should take certain precautions in order to be better prepared. In this day and age you can even purchase martial arts videos to assist you with your training. While these would have been laughed at by some in the past, this is no longer the case. I personally know two guys who got pretty good at Brazilian Ju Jitsu just by training together under the instruction of martial arts videos. There is more than one way to acquire instruction now days.

If there’s one thing I learned about martial arts in general, it’s that it humblizes you. Or at least it should. Just because you train hard and get good at some fighting style doesn’t mean you’re invulnerable to attack. In reality there is always someone bigger and better. And if you want to get technical, any fool can step up behind you and clock you with a bat. There’s no training needed for this. So martial arts also teach you that you’re human and must stay vigilant at all times. Being aware of your surroundings is half the battle. Anyway, for those who want an introduction to a particular style, but have no access to a school in your area, you might want to give martial arts videos a shot. These can help you better understand a style of self-defense and how it operates. Naturally it’s better to get the real-deal instruction in-person from a qualified teacher, and then use the martial arts videos merely as a reference tool to aid you in practicing at home. But this is not realistic for all of us. Some people reside too far from a decent school to attend classes.

Virtually every style of martial arts has instructional videos to offer. From Karate, to Tae Kwon Do, to BJJ, to Aikido, to Wing Chun, to Muay Thai, to many more. The list goes on and on, and there are various instructors offering these martial arts videos. One place you might enjoy checking out is WLE.com. This web-store offers plenty to satisfy any martial arts needs.

Addictive behavior finds a new venue: our electronic gadgets!

Addictive behavior finds a new venue: our electronic gadgets!

We Americans are not alone in our zeal for the latest electronic gadgetry. People all over the world carry their electronic communication and music devices with them, literally everywhere. It’s funny that we are so used to keeping in touch, 24/7, that many of us even take them on vacation! How is it possible to relax on that beautiful beach in the Florida Keys, with dingers, bells and buzzers are going off every ten minutes? This smacks of a new style of addictive behavior.

I talked with a woman recently who said that, before she goes to work, she goes for a swim at a community pool for her daily exercise. She brings both her cell phone and blackberry ? just in case! ?I just can’t stand to be out of touch! It’s important that I be always accessible!? To protect her gadgetry from chlorinated water, before plunging in to the pool, she slips them in plastic zipper bags.

Not wanting to be contentious, I said nothing. Silently, I wondered what might happen if a kid ran by. Two visuals popped up. One was a crunching sound as the kid’s foot landed squarely on the instrument. The other had the kid slipping, pushing the gadget in to the pool. She’d laid the bags about four inches from the edge of the pool. I wondered how she would ever hear her gadgets crying out to be noticed. Might someone steal them? The addictive behavior aspect struck me immediately, because she didn’t leave them locked in her car. Because they were useless while she was swimming her laps, this meant that she wanted to have access the very moment she exited the pool.

Sure, there are some people who, due to the nature or importance of their work, are required to be available. However, that teen over there, walking between classes, texting as she goes, probably isn’t one of them.

Addictive behavior with electronic gadgets is so widespread, that some states have legislated use of, for example, cell phones. So many people were talking on cell phones as they drove down the freeways, there was a notable increase in traffic accidents.

One expert likens gadgetry addiction to alcohol addiction, pointing out that just as the alcoholic is unable to moderate their use, the gadget addict is in the same mindset.

If you find yourself unable to go anywhere without your electronic friends, understand that this is addictive behavior. You should take steps to rein in your obsession. Here are a few suggestions to help you get a handle on the problem.

If it’s Saturday and you’re going to the gym for your weekly workout, leave your electronics at home. If you need to make a call, there are phone booths ? remember them? On Friday night, your work week is over. Every little thing is all wrapped up and you know your boss isn’t going to be calling you at 10pm on a work issue. Remove the battery from your electronic pal and stick it in a drawer.

Another signature of electronic addictive behavior is the gal who checks every 30 seconds to see if she’s missed something. Just as with the smoker trying to quit, wean yourself slowly away from this habit. Check every fifteen minutes. See if you can make it to half an hour.

Here’s another helpful thought to ponder. All addictive behaviors have the element of a master-slave relationship. Now just who is going to be the boss here?
