If you have children, then chances are there will come a point in time when they’ll ask for a pet. Dogs seem to be the most popular request, which is understandable since these animals can bring years and years of faithful companionship, love, and joy to your family. However, you need to put a lot of thought into a decision of this magnitude because caring for an animal for a lifetime takes a great deal of work and dedication. Childhood allergies are on the rise these days, so learning about dog allergy symptoms before bringing a pet home is a must.

There are several different dog allergy symptoms that manifest pretty quickly upon contact or even close proximity to one of these four-legged friends. Humans are most likely to be allergic to the saliva, dander (skin scales or flakes), or even urine of dogs. A trustworthy science of biology is built on the scientific method

The science of biology is the scientific approach to the study of life on earth. As a science, the study produces scientifically validated assertions about life. The assertions may have been made before, and may be true, but they may have not been scientifically justified. Being himself a life form, being part of the biological phenomena, man has an intimate knowledge of life. Thousands of years of collective wisdom on the subject of life existed before the crystallization of the scientific method in the nineteenth century. Man was thoroughly cognizant of human anatomy, at least of what the body presented to the unaided human eye. He had been a hunter. He knew the anatomy of the animals he ate. He was a farmer. He understood the simple biology of plants. Through thousands of years of experience, he had learned to treat diseases with herbs. As early as the first century, man was performing surgery. The Egyptians developed surgical techniques that are still used today. Man’s knowledge of life was already deep by the time the scientific method was formalized, and found practical application in man’s daily life.

The knowledge man had of life before the science of biology, lacking the science, was fraught with errors and misconceptions, some which proved fatal when applied to medical problems. The well known use of leeches to treat some aliments is a good example of a non-scientific conception of life that, when applied, can have disastrous effects. Even today, with the scientific method firmly established and a body of knowledge of life that fills libraries, non-scientific conceptions and treatments appear. A woman in California, for instance, in the nineties, took turpentine to treat a cancer. When AIDS first appeared, some in San Francisco were drinking the urine of a baby on the theory that the urine held immunologically beneficially properties. Without the benefits of scientific scrutiny, without the science of biology, much of man’s knowledge of biology was simply wrong, and when applied, often created worse conditions than the disease itself.

The science of biology is based on the scientific method. The scientific method requires the observation of empirical phenomena, the formulation of a hypothesis, and the testing of these hypotheses through experimentation. To adhere to scientific method, this process must be repeatable: others should be able to conduct the same experiments and obtain the same results. While this seems imminently practicable to modern man, it was not so before the rise of science. Much of what stood for statements of truth were justified because someone of authority had stated it. Science does not rest on authorities, but on the rigorous requirements of actual observation and comprehensive tests. It does not attempt to validate an agenda, a point of view, religious or philosophical standpoints, or any such bias. The facts reveal themselves. It is objective. Through the scientific method, the science of biology obtains a body of knowledge that is based on fact, repeatable and consistent.

By scientific reasoning, man has corrected his faulty knowledge regarding life, and has assembled a body of knowledge that is the foundation of modern medicine. The benefits are easily recognized. Microbiology has revealed the germ. Many bacterial and viral diseases that once wiped out entire populations have been defeated. Agriculture and animal husbandry have become more productive, thanks to the science of biology. Millions more are able to eat. What other wonders man may achieve in the field of life have yet to be seen, but we can be assured, with science midwifing our knowledge of life, the science of biology will be a body of knowledge we all can trust.

Seven inspiring topics for Bible studies for teens

When Christians send their kids to Sunday school, Bible studies form the main topic of study, meant to teach the messages conveyed in the Holy Bible. This includes both the Old and New Testaments, a history of the Judeo-Christian beliefs, from the creation of the world to the final message from God, in the person of Jesus Christ, God’s last manifestation of Himself on earth.

It’s unfortunate that much of the message is lost in the telling. By this, I mean that Sunday school teachers treat this history as isolated and unrelated events, with little emphasis on the unfolding of God’s consistent message to all of humanity. Young children become acquainted with the Bible in terms of separate, but unrelated stories, with little meaning beyond sequential events. By the time these kids reach their teens, they are generally indoctrinated to believe that the entire story of the Bible lacks a cohesive message. Here, we hope to provide some inspiration for teachers of Bible studies for teens, which will enlighten and inspire kids to ask the questions that make the lessons and people of the Bible come alive. Here are seven sample Bible studies for teens, designed to inspire them to a greater depth of knowledge.

1.The question of Adam and Eve: according to the Scriptures, this couple was God’s first creation of humanity. They were created, born into Paradise, with no obligation except obedience to God. Their only restriction was that they were not to eat of the fruits of the tree of knowledge, lest they lose their innocence. The serpent appeared, tempting Eve to eat of the fruit of the tree, thus knowing both good and evil. She disobeyed God, bringing the fruit to Adam. However, Adam did eat it. Generally, theologians agree that the fall of man was woman’s fault. In your class of Bible studies for teens, ask for the opinions of the students, which will probably turn into a lively debate.

2.Some thousands of years later, humanity had morally and ethically declined to the point where God decided to start over, bringing the Flood. Only Noah and his family, along with two each of God’s animals, were spared. Noah, at God’s direction, built the Ark to keep them safe while the rest of the earth was engulfed in water. This Bible studies for teens lesson can focus on why Noah, out of all of humanity, was saved. What, if anything, was so exemplary about Noah?

3.Abraham is an unusual Biblical figure, both as the archetypal man of faith in God and because he is considered the father figure of Jews, Christians and Muslims. God made a covenant with Abraham which concerned both Isaac, his son by Sarah, and Ishmael, his son by Hagar, blessing both with fruitfulness and the establishment of many nations. To Isaac, God specifically gives the Land of Canaan for an everlasting possession (see Genesis 17:4 through 17:20). This Bible studies for teens lesson is perfect for a discussion topic on how these covenants might be interpreted in light of the situation in the Middle East today.

4.The story of Moses and the Exodus from Egypt is another excellent topic for Bible studies for teens lessons. Unlike Abraham, Moses did not have unerring faith in God. For example, when God directed Moses to speak to Pharaoh, Moses expressed dismay at his inability to be articulate. Even though God assured him that He would provide the proper words at the necessary time, Moses doubted. God wasn’t happy about this lack of faith, but agreed to allow Aaron to do the speaking. Ask the class members if they feel this had something to do with Moses not reaching the Promised Land.

5.Following the Exodus, God wanted to write his Ten commandments on the hearts of every individual. The Jews were too afraid, fearing they would die at hearing the voice of God. God accommodated them by writing the commandments on stone tablets. While Moses was up on Mt. Sinai, considerable debauchery, bad behavior and idol worshiping was taking place in the valley below, which resulted in some dire consequences. The discussion for this Bible studies for teens could focus on how humanity might have been different in today’s world, had God written his commandments on their hearts, as He wished? Would His commandments then have been more like a genetic imprint, known and remembered by every generation from then to now?

6.Throughout history, man has been desirous of Kings and priests, to tell them what to do. God’s wish was that (Exodus 19:6) ?… ye shall be unto me a Kingdom of priests, and an holy nation …? God wanted to commune with each individual, not set up a hierarchical organization, headed by individual men. However, having given man freedom, he allowed them their Kings and priests. Again, maybe God’s plan was the better option. For this Bible studies for teens lesson, open up a discussion that debates which choice might have been better for humanity. Had the ten commandments been written on the hearts of each individual, would there have been a need for a priestly class? After all, look what happened.

7.According to Christian doctrine, Jesus was God’s last word, the manifestation of God on earth as human. Jesus, (Luke 17:21) declared, ?Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.? Just as with God’s desire for a ?nation of priests?, Jesus seems to be telling us that every individual has access to God through their heart, if only they will look and listen. As the teacher, you may be surprised at the flurry of thoughts coming out of this discussion.

Bible studies for teens should provoke discussion and passionate thinking on the more esoteric messages contained within the Bible. Try just one of these lessons and see if the response from your students isn’t phenomenal! You may see your class size increase as a result, once the word gets out.

Most people have a room or two in their house that has been devoted to junk. For some people, it is some sort of collection that takes over a lot of space. For others it is a hobby or heirlooms. My junk room houses art supplies, extra clothes, toiletries, you name it. Anything that did not find a good place in the house ended up in the junk room. The excess went to the basement. Having storage space for rarely used items seems to be the most important reason to have a basement.

Our family is a bit unique in this aspect. Instead of the typical clutter, it is Christmas decorations that take up an entire room at my parents’ house. Boxes and boxes of Christmas decorations fill a twelve by twelve foot room in the basement but it does not stop there. My mother has stowed away dozens more boxes of Christmas decorations in the attic. After fifteen years in the same house, I have never seen the attic but I have a pretty good idea of what it must look like.

Judging by what gets dragged into the living room each year after Thanksgiving, she has managed to hide more boxes of Christmas decorations that I would probably believe. She has even managed to keep three, yes three, artificial Christmas trees. As children we all wore sweatshirts she decorated with wreaths and holly. Pretty fun all in all but I think we will be forgiven because it was, after all, the eighties. I almost forgot about the six foot Santa who stands just inside the front door to greet holiday time visitors. My father and I bought him, the king of all Christmas decorations, last year for her birthday.

You see my mother’s birthday is Christmas. Now you understand the mass of decorations. From Christmas candles, place settings, wreaths and stuffed animals, our house is filled to the brim every winter with Christmas decorations. The older I get the cuter it all is to me but first time visitors to this Christmas wonderland of a house are usually a bit shocked at first. It does not take too long to get a newbie into the holiday spirit around mom’s house though.

As a child I did not appreciate her overabundance of the Christmas spirit but as I got older I realized that few children had the magic Christmases that we did. Perhaps that tradition was the best Christmas gift we ever received.

Denver Animal Shelter

Most pet owners are responsible and caring but there are unfortunate animals that find themselves lost, abandoned, neglected or the victims of cruelty. There are organizations to help and Denver animal shelters contribute to animal welfare in the city. Most organizations devoted to animal care are non-profit and they rely on donations from the general public. Many shelters are run by volunteers. They will never put a healthy animal down.

The Denver Municipal Animal Shelter is located on Jason Street and deals with hundreds of new dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other small animals each week. Donations are welcome and are tax deductible. This Denver animal shelter is a part of the Division of Animal Control and operates an adopt a pet scheme for a small fee. Senior citizens are given a discount. In addition to dogs and cats, there are sometimes birds, iguanas, fish, rabbits or snakes. When a dog or cat is adopted, they must be spayed or neutered before the new owner is allowed to take him or her home. The shelter gives dogs the distemper and parvo vaccinatation but the person adopting must organise a rabies vaccination. Cats are given the feline distemper and upper respiratory virus vaccination. In Denver, all cats and dogs aged over 6 months are required by law to be licensed. The shelter has an online facility for obtaining a license.

The Dumb Friends League was founded in 1910 to care for sick and injured animals. They also run an adoption scheme for the animals they rescue. Part of their work at this animal shelter in Denver is to educate the public on how to take care of pets. It is the largest organization of its kind in the Rocky Mountains area. The main shelter is on Quebec Street and there is another one at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. In addition to placing the dogs, cats, and rabbits etc., with new owners, the shelter also re-unites pets that have been lost with their owners. The shelter also welcomes donations to meet the expense of housing over 25,000 homeless animals each year. Members of the public give money but also supplies, such as pet food, toys, dog and cat collars, pet cushions, grooming tools and office equipment to assist in the day-to-day running. It is also possible to be a foster parent to a pet. This is open to adults and young people aged between 12 and 17 in the Junior Foster Programme. The animal shelter has a gift shop with a range of pet goods, including pet food dishes, car bumper stickers, greeting cards, and tote bags.

The Animal Rescue and Adoption Society on Delaware Street is devoted to the welfare of cats. They operate adoption and foster schemes and will pass a cat on to another animal shelter in Denver if their capacity is full. The shelter is funded from donations and fundraising events. The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering, a cardboard transport carrier, vaccinations, safety collar and identity tag. A microchipping service is available for an additional fee.

Night Vision Scopes

My first exposure to night vision scopes was actually watching nature channel documentaries. Like most hunters, I began as a wildlife lover and remain so in many ways. I remember in particular watching videos of the African Safari at night. They would show animals with glowing green eyes staring off at invisible cameras and tracking down prey in the darkness. They would show small bats and moths mingling with tigers and giraffes. All of this they was shot through night vision cameras and scopes, filmed by some intrepid soul exploring the plains of Africa.

It was easy to take it all for granted. After all, it was no surprise that you could see all of it ? it was on TV. I never really thought about what a cool technology night vision scopes were until I actually had the chance to try one myself. It was after I’d been hunting for a few years, and a friend of mine decided to take me out for a nighttime hunt. He had a night vision scope installed on his precision rifle. I thought such things were only used by assassins, and was surprised when he told me that he often went hunting with it. I decided to join him, and we went off into the woods together.

Back then, the resolution of night vision scopes wasn’t that fantastic. Even so, I do see things much more clearly than I could have with my naked eye or a flashlight. Large shapes were clear, and movement was obvious. I could see a large doe 100 meters away that had no idea we were approaching, and quietly aimed my rifle at it. I killed it cleanly with one shot, feeling like a masterful hunter. Suddenly, I was no longer burdened by the constraints of daylight. I was able to hunt and kill my quarry at night. The power was intoxicating.

Of course, night vision scopes do have one problem and it is a potentially dangerous one. Using one makes you feel like you can see more than you actually can. A night vision scope tends to turn everything into either grayscale or green scale. Either way, it is easy to miss nuances. If you are looking at a target that is radiating a lot of body heat, for example, you can miss something slightly behind or to the side of it that you normally would see in the daylight. That is why hunting with night vision goggles and scopes requires even more caution than normal. You never know where another hunter might be.
