Tips on hallway decorating to bring a welcoming and vibrant look to a dull hallway

Most of us spend lots of time and effort decorating our homes, yet the hallway is so often regarded as a mere passageway transitioning to bedrooms and baths leading off this space. Hallway decorating is perhaps, not even on your to-do list. The unadorned hallway can be a dull looking space indeed. True, it’s not living space, but hallway decorating can visually open up other rooms with a few simple decorating ideas. Let’s see how you can turn the plain Jane hallway into an integral part of your decorating scheme.

Narrow hallways are the norm for most of us. If your hallway is long and narrow, you may well wonder how it can be dressed up without giving an even greater feeling of being closed-in. The answer? When you’ve got what appears to be a decorating lemon, it’s time to make lemonade!

A dark, narrow hallway will seem foreboding. Think light when you’re choosing colors for the walls. A pure white tends to create a sterile, cold look, while an eggshell white lends a warm tone, as do pastels in the warm hues of the color wheel. If your taste runs to wallpaper, for the purpose of hallway decorating, stick with light backgrounds and small prints. Remember that dark colors and large patterns will only make the hallway appear smaller and narrower, as well as severely limiting your decorating options.

If you have existing wood-paneled walls in the hallway, which are too lovely to scrap, there are other hallway decorating techniques which can showcase the beauty of that wood, while still bringing light and elegance to the space. Mirrors are one way to open up the visual space. Depending on the configuration of your hallway, a long rectangular mirror at the end reflects light coming from the living room – and gives everyone a chance for a last minute inspection of their appearance before leaving the house In the case of walls painted in light colors, mirrors only serve to enhance this effect.

Track lighting and spot lighting are another staple in successful hallway decorating plans. These fixtures are easy to install, inexpensive and versatile in giving you the precise lighting you desire. For example, if you have a painting, placed on the wall between two doorways, a single spotlight directs the viewer’s attention to this art work, while also providing light to the hallway.

When planning your hallway decorating theme, there are a couple of basic approaches. You might hang a single piece of framed art work, centered between each doorway along the hallway corridor. Each piece should be spaced far enough from the next so as to allow the viewer to pause at each. Think of the wall space remaining around each piece as another ‘frame’ of sorts, with sufficient wall space to avoid a cluttered look. You might think of this as a mini art ‘gallery’ in your home.

You can use paintings as your main theme, with a decorated seasonal wreath breaking up the spaces between paintings, coordinating the colors in the decorations with those in the art work. Wreaths made of natural raffia, simply decorated work very well in this decorating plan. Make the size of the wreaths commensurate with the wall space, again conserving enough open wall space to create that ‘gallery’ effect.

A montage of family photos is a popular hallway decorating theme. You can make your family photos the main theme of the entire hallway, to good visual effect, so long as you apply the same spacing and centering ‘rule’ in order to provide cohesive focal points and avoid the cluttered look. Use lighting to highlight each grouping.

Last, it’s smart to measure the length of the hallway and mark the points of each doorway leading off the hall. Sketch this out on paper or using home design software. Measure your paintings, wall hangings, wreaths, photo groupings or whatever decorations please you, then sketch in those dimensions. It’s then easy to see if a decorative item is too large or small for a given space. Home design software often features a means to direct lighting and reveal the space that light will cover.

It’s easy to see that hallway decorating needn’t be expensive or time-consuming. Most of the time and effort is spent in the planning stage. The rest is just fun, with beautiful results that enhance the look of your entire home.

An Antivirus Comparison of Fake Rogue Scanners

An Antivirus Comparison of Fake Rogue Scanners

People who hold out on installing antivirus software on their computers have lots of good reasons to do so: antivirus software can slow down your computer, it can often make a nuisance of itself if you don’t choose the right brand, and so on. But sometimes, when your computer slows down or becomes flaky, you do want to make sure that it is a malware issue before you relent and buy antivirus. Some more trusting folks do have antivirus on their computer, but still have a nagging suspicion that the slowdown they notice in their computer’s performance comes from overactive antivirus, and not from some undetected virus lurking in the system. For people in these dilemmas, scammers have a little special treatment in mind – rogue antivirus scanners. Let us first explain what these are, and then do an antivirus comparison – for software of the rogue variety.

The rogue antivirus concept takes many shapes. And they always bear evidence of the same modus operandi. Some modify the coding in your Internet browser, and pop up what looks like a Windows system notification that asks you to do something; it is just other annoying pop-up though, that wants to make you believe it is legit. Some other lowlife attempts are occasioned by a virus infection, or an ActiveX script, and will take on the appearance of a properly installed application. Whatever they look like, they all do the same thing: they tell you that they have found a terrible virus on your computer, and will ask you to press a button to address the issue. When you do, they ask you for a small $25 donation, and then disappear with your money.

One of the worst offenders is Antivirus 360, that plies its trade by trying to look and sound like software you already trust. The name itself is a take on Norton 360, and they hope you’ll think that it is connected to the genuine article because it has the same number. When they pop up a window on your browser, they make it look exactly like XP’s Security Center. And exactly where XP’s real Security Center would have a virus protection section, right next to where the real “Recommendations” buton would be, they have a little link to buy their product. All they want to do is get your credit card number to take you for as much as they can. But a rogue antivirus comparison should bring up stuff that is a lot worse than this. Antivirus 2009 spreads mainly through spam. They put out increasingly alarming warnings with realistic-looking graphics, and when you offer to pay them for their cleanup services, they flood your computer with viruses.

In a fake antivirus comparison, Win32/InternetAntivirus always has to bear special mention; Microsoft put out a special warning against this beauty a couple of months ago. Microsoft describes it this way: “A rogue program that displays false and misleading alerts regarding malware, in order to convince users to purchase rogue security software”. Once you purchase their rogue security software, they install a password stealing virus on your system called TrojanSpy:Win32/Chadem that performs as promised, and steals your stuff. It is no real use keeping an eye on the websites either that these come from. They keep changing. But just in case it does any good, here are a few of the top names in the fake business: WinCleaner 2009, Malware Doctor, Spyware XP Guard, Spyware Remover 2009, Total Protect 2009/Total Defender/Total Security, Virus Shield 2009/Virus Shield Pro, and Windows Security Suite. Heads up.

Get A Virtual Makeover

Get A Virtual Makeover

When I turned 12, I started thinking about wearing makeup. I?m not sure why I was so into it, but I was. The problem was that I had no idea how to wear it, and it seemed that all of the other girls in my class knew exactly what they were doing. Perhaps it was because my mom did not wear a lot, and she never really took the time to talk to me about it. Even as an adult today, I still feel like I am not quite getting it right. I do well now, but everyone could use that help. That is when getting a virtual makeover can be fun, and it doesn?t have to be just about makeup either.

You may be confused about how to wear your makeup, or you may want to know more about what colors you should be wearing, or what you would look like with shorter or longer hair. Those are all good questions, and things that you may want to know before you go shopping or to the beauty salon. You can get a virtual makeover that can help you look at how you would be with anything of any style, any color, or any length. They can also be a lot of fun.

When doing a virtual makeover for hair or makeup, you can find some sites that allow you to upload a picture of your own face. For best results, a full view of the front of your face is the best idea. You can then try different makeup colors and styles to see what you think looks good on you. You can also try on almost unlimited numbers of hair styles to see what looks the best. You can try different lengths, and even different hair colors if you are thinking of going with something a bit different.

When it comes to clothes, you want to use your own body shot, or a template that matches what you look like. Without a true representation you may as well be looking at clothing on mannequins in the store or clothing on the hanger. Use your true body size so you know you are picking out things that look the best on you. Some shopping sites have these virtual makeover pages right on their sites, and some are independent. You can also look around to see if you can get virtual makeover software you can use in your own home to your heart?s content.

Building A Fence

Building A Fence

There are many things you need to consider when you are building a fence. You may have decided that you would like a little privacy, or perhaps you would like to build a barrier to keep your children safe. No matter what you have chosen or how you chose to go about it, there may be more to think about when building a fence than you have considered. In some cases you have to have some sort of building permit, you may have to talk to your neighbors as well.

Even though building a fence may seem like you are putting a wall between you and your neighbors, quite often this makes for good relations with in a neighborhood. Most people will not be offended if you are building a fence, as long as you talk to them about a first. Explain why you want to have a fence between your properties, and asked them if they have any problems or issues with what you are going to do.

You may also want to tell your neighbor that you are building a fence and that you would like their input. They, after all, have to stare at this fence as well. They may greatly appreciate the fact that you came to them first. You may also have to talk to someone in your community about any specifications you need before you begin building a fence. In some cases, you may not be able to have one. However, in most communities, these are fine.

Remember when building a fence that you have to keep your family in mind. If you have small children, you want to make sure that your fence is all-inclusive and is not something that can be easily climbed over. There is no sense in building a fence to keep your children safe from the roadway if they can easily climb over the top of it, or climb underneath it. You have to think of beauty when you build a fence, but you also have to consider safety issues. If privacy is all you are looking for, building a fence will be a little easier, but you just have to build a little higher. In most cases, most people have fences for a combination of both reasons. It is not necessarily privacy from our neighbors that we are looking for, though this does happen, it is usually so that cars going by on the street will not gawk at us as we spend the afternoon in the backyard with our children.

Fashion Makeovers

Fashion Makeovers

When you were watching Beauty and the Geek, you know that it was really about seeing how much better the geeks looked after they cleaned up a bit. After that it was about inner beauty and beauties using their brains. The public is obsessed with fashion makeovers?the ?beautiful all along? is a common, almost clich? theme in a lot of TV shows and movies, showing us that in the end, it?s hard to say that outer beauty doesn?t matter. Showing that someone supposedly unattractive could actually be sort of attractive once they wore the right clothes, cut their hair and plastered on some makeup is a different message from expressing that what?s on the inside counts more than what meets the eye. Not to say that this is necessarily vapid and shallow. Well, it sort of is and we?re definitely guilty of overemphasizing and objectifying beauty, but inherently, there?s nothing wrong with pleasing the eyes.

So, we admit that we like fashion makeovers. We?re fascinated with before and afters?we like to goggle over how they went from this to that in an ugly duckling to swan kind of way. But why do we goggle so much? It could be the shock factor, or maybe it gives the rest of us hope. Admittedly, it can be pretty inspirational to see someone with low esteem transform into someone confident about themselves with some help from a team of beauticians.

But the flip side of fashion makeovers is that in a way, they?re saying that you?re not okay the way you are. Take ?What Not To Wear,? which basically ambushes people and informs them that the way they dress is so bad that it?s offending their friends and the rest of society, all on live television. By the end of the program you can see that it really was for the better and that the person is really happy with the transformation, but at the same time you?re probably glad it?s them and not you on the show. And you wonder if there were any victims who refused to be on the show and then lashed out at their ?friends.?

It?s possible to say that giving someone a makeover is about bringing inside beauty to the outside rather than changing who they are. To be fair, along with the snarkiness Stacy and Clinton often praise certain physical attributes in their victims and try to emphasize them, showing that the issue here is not the person per se, but how they?re dressing. So you can feel a little better knowing that the problem isn?t you, but your awful fashion sense. But even if radical fashion makeovers are well meaning, we?d often rather see them makeover someone else.

Sensitive Skin Acne Treatment

Not everyone has the same skin type. This is something you should know about face and body care. After all, if you are using the wrong topical treatments on your skin, you could actually be creating more problems. Take acne breakouts for instance. Depending on your skin type, your face will require different products to deal with whiteheads, blackheads, blemishes and cystic acne. Just to give you an idea, the most common skin types are normal, combination, dry, oily/problematic, and sensitive. If you’re not sure what exactly sensitive means, it basically refers to how delicate your epidermis is and how easily it reacts to strong ingredients. If you have a sensitive complexion, you’ll know it, because most skin care products will irritate your complexion in some way or another. Fortunately there are sensitive skin acne treatment solutions out there to choose from these days.

If you are certain you have sensitive skin, then it is time to proceed on with searching for the right sensitive skin acne treatment or daily cleanser to aid with your grooming regimen. If you aren’t sure, go ahead and consult a licensed dermatologist. Now, finding the right sensitive skin acne treatment or hydrating moisturizer is not near as difficult in this day and age as it was. At this point your biggest decision will be what brand name to choose. To give you an idea, there are brands like Lancome, Clinique and Aveda that all offer sensitive skin care products. It all depends on what it is you’re looking for and what you are willing to spend. While Lancome will probably cost you the most money, Aveda is a skin care and beauty line that places a great focus on all-natural plant extracts and organic components. Clinique likes to keep things simple and do not attempt to dress products up in fancy packaging. They go for more of the clean medical or professional look.

Individuals with sensitive skin types can also find sensitive skin acne treatments in local drugstores. Think along the lines of brands like Neutrogena and Clearasil. Both of these brand names offer sensitive skin acne treatment products that do not irritate, lead to redness, and over-dry the user’s complexion. If you know you are sensitive to a certain ingredient, be sure to read each container and find out if the product is infused with that component. The more you know, the better off you will be with your choice of acne treatments. A couple ingredients that you should try to avoid are Benzyl Peroxide and alcohol, which are both drying agents. These two key ingredients can certainly lead to over-drying, redness, and further breakouts for some people with sensitive skin types.

Younger Looking Skin is Possible

With the mentality of our society always changing, it is only natural for women and some men to desire younger looking skin. Many individuals as they age even want more hair, whiter teeth, and a better physique. After all, who really wants to age and watch their youthful appearance diminish? Fortunately there is a broad spectrum of beauty products out there to assist both women and men with improving their skin’s texture, elasticity, and firmness. You just need to find one that suits you.

Let’s begin with your skin type. If you know whether you have oily, normal, dry, combination or sensitive skin, then you are ahead of the game. A second factor to always consider is your age. Women in their thirties should not be looking at the same products as women in their forties, and so on. As you age, you need to take different measures to get back the younger looking skin you once new. To keep it simple, there are certain factors that alter your skin. First of all, both collagen and elastin both decrease as you age. This means you skin will begin to wrinkle more and sag. It’s plain and simply part of life. Then there are the factors of what you eat and how much sun exposure you receive. Nothing will age your skin more than the sun’s powerful rays. You should always keep this in mind, and try to where a good sunscreen when outdoors. It will certainly help you maintain younger looking skin as you age through your thirties, forties, and fifties. Think SPF 15 and higher.

The key is to not overdo it. When you are shopping around for cosmetics and beauty products that aid you with maintaining younger looking skin, you should consider the dryness and age of your face. How much moisture do you need? There is also the issue of additional skin concerns. For instance, do you have acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation or a sensitive complexion? You need to take these crucial issues into account when seeking out the right skin care regimen for younger looking skin.

Speak with a dermatologist if possible. A skin care professional like this can really steer you in the right direction toward topical treatments you need to maintain a young and healthy glow. However, this does not mean you need to spend a fortune on skin care creams and serums. Keep in mind that there are a number of products to choose from in department stores, drugstores, and clinics alike. You can also check out online websites like sephora.com to find topical treatments that assist women and men with achieving younger looking skin. This is often a wonderful way to get a discount on many skin care products offered in today’s beauty market.

Looking for a simple salmon recipe you can write home about? Look no further …

Looking for a simple salmon recipe you can write home about? Look no further …

Surely you’ve had occasion to want to serve an elegant meal that doesn’t require a degree in the culinary arts, yet will be impressive and memorable. Search as you might through a flock of cook books, a simple salmon recipe can’t be beat. Cooking salmon to perfection requires no special gourmet techniques, little time and delivers a heavenly entree your guests will remember with pleasure. The delicate pink-orange color, rich but understated flavor and flaky texture all contribute to diner satisfaction. You really don’t need to be an experienced cook to deliver Heaven-on-a-plate. In fact, you can make a nice reputation as a gourmet, based on a single, simple salmon recipe. Let’s see just how easy it is.

For some reason I haven’t yet divined, salmon is still a reasonably priced food. It’s available fresh or frozen, year around. While the best of the best is at the other end of your fishing line, barring that availability, the supermarket has a quite admirable facsimile. Commercial salmon fishing boats have facilities to process and freeze the fish within minutes of the catch. This salmon is marked on the package as ‘wild’, meaning that it was caught on the open seas. Alternatively, there’s the ‘farm-raised’ salmon, raised in contained sea beds and harvested at a certain size.

So what’s the difference? Wild salmon is more costly at the market, for obvious reasons. The fisherman can’t count on his catch. Farm-raised salmon yields a predictable catch, and so commands a lesser price. Various cooking magazines have conducted ‘blind tastings’ to see if diners can discern a difference in taste between the wild and farm-raised salmon. The conclusion? Some gifted individuals seem to be able to detect a superior taste and texture in the wild salmon, but such individuals are few and far between. Unless you have the nose of a perfumier, it’s unlikely you’ll notice a difference. Freshness is what really counts. With modern freezing techniques, you’ll be hard pressed to tell the difference.

Now that we have those product differences out of the way, let’s move on to how to prepare the perfect simple salmon recipe, the one prompting a postcard to your guests’ Mom.

If you’ve purchased fresh salmon, plan to cook it that day. Frozen salmon should be placed in the frig the morning of your dinner. The fish will be thawed by evening. All you need do is choose the method of cooking, all of which produce a perfect result. You can microwave, broil, grill or poach. All fish cooks well in the microwave. Unlike beef, which becomes tough in microwave cooking, fish cooks easily, with a perfect texture, in a matter of minutes. With fish, the microwave oven is quite forgiving. Depending on the thickness of the cut, the salmon will cook within 1-2 minutes per side. You can open the door and check as often as you like. When one side is done (the meat is opaque and not transparent), you turn it over. Cook until done. Now that’s a simple salmon recipe! If you choose to broil, grill, or poach, the same rules apply.

You can see that the actual cooking time of your simple salmon recipes is so brief, that you’ll want to have the rest of the meal at the ready. For example, if you’re serving the salmon on a bed of rice, cook the rice first! If a dinner salad is your first course, have it ready. Warm your bread. Once you’ve used this simple salmon recipe, you’ll see that it’s the rest of the meal that involves work and some culinary skill!

The beauty of the easy salmon recipe is that this food stands on its own. All you need to add is a fresh sprig of dill or tarragon and a slice or two of fresh lemon. At the risk of gilding the lily, how about some Hollandaise sauce? (There are some excellent packaged mixes.) Now, set the table and light the candelabra!
