A great gift idea for the ladies on your list: women’s exercise clothing

Every woman knows that winter is when we all tend to pack on a few pounds ? cold weather and holiday celebrations encourage hearty appetites! Then, we’ve still got to look fetching, despite the Valentine candies coming our way. Come spring, women’s thoughts turn to that summer bikini. So, the bottom line is, women want to look good year ’round. Exercise is certainly part of the solution!

Some people (especially men!) are wary of presenting a gift such as women’s exercise clothing, fearing it will possibly be received as a veiled insult, ?Oh, so you think I’m fat?? Au Contraire! How about ?Wow, what a great gift!? Fashionable women’s exercise clothing gives a woman inspiration, to keep that New Year’s resolution and actually get out and exercise, (looking good), drop a few pounds and be fit and trim. This gift lets you give friends and family a nudge in the right direction. We all know we should get more exercise and, why not do it in style?

When choosing the type of women’s exercise clothing for your lady, consider what kind of exercise she goes in for ? running, yoga, skating, bowling or vigorous workout regimens in the living room.

A full leotard suit is comfortable, attractive and easy to wash out every day and is a good choice for indoor workouts or that yoga or aerobics class. Sweats with fleecy linings are soft against the body and keep her cozy as she jogs. BTW, sweats don’t have to be those gym class plain Janes anymore. You can buy designer sweats, with fancy trims and slimming cuts that are lovely looking … good enough for a trip to the mall!

For the cool weather jogger or bicyclist, get her a full set of silk long johns with a pair of color coordinated or contrasting shorts. The silk is oh-so-luxurious and keeps her warm and feminine. This choice of women’s exercise clothing is one of the most popular and versatile. While practical, silk also makes women feel beautiful.

As a little ’stocking stuffer’ addition to your gift, sports bras and decorated socks (not tubes!) are lady pleasers as well.

If you need assistance in choosing the right type of women’s exercise clothing for the intended purpose, the sports shop’s clothing staff can help. If you’re shopping online, most clothing websites have considerable guidance in the description of different items.

As for size, if your gift is for your Mom or sister, all you need do is look in her closet for size labels. Barring this type of investigation, you might simply ask the lady, or check with the store to be sure the clothing you purchase may be exchanged.

If you haven’t shopped for sports clothing lately, you may be shocked at how fashionable women’s exercise clothing has become ? some very irresistible stuff out there!

Trust me, this gift will be loved! You may want to get some for yourself!

Five formulas for a recipe for salad to keep you deliciously in the pink of health!

When you tell the family, ?We’re having a salad with dinner tonight?, everyone envisions the simple tossed salad. While most people enjoy a tossed salad, it becomes old if you serve it every day. You might even think that it’s ridiculous to have a recipe for salad. You toss the greens, add tomatoes, onions and croutons, right? However, if you want to get everyone closer to consuming those 5-9 servings of fruits and veggies a day, it helps to have several formulas for different types of salad from which to create a variety of recipes for salad. Here we provide five different formulas, each with many and diverse tastes and virtues. Variety is the spice of life!

A recipe for salad made with fruit makes a great dessert. Ambrosia is easy to make, inexpensive and a crowd pleaser. Fresh fruits in season may be combined with frozen fruits for a nice mix. For example, a sliced banana, fresh strawberries, an apple and some frozen blueberries go well together. Mix with a container of pina colada flavored yogurt, a few tablespoons of shredded coconut and some non-dairy whipped topping. These are all healthy ingredients with just enough sweetness to satisfy the criteria for dessert. Mix and match your fruits and flavor of yogurt to your personal tastes.

Another great dessert recipe for salad is the old fashioned Jell-O(TM) salad. You can buy the unsweetened type and use a sugar substitute, such as Splenda(R), which tastes just like sugar, for a healthier result. Even vegetables will make the grade here. Using orange Jell-O(TM) as your base, let it gel until half firm and shred a couple of carrots into the gelatin. Yes, it’s a sneaky, but tasty way to get some antioxidants into your dessert. A can of unsweetened fruit cocktail mixed into the gelatin is another good dessert, snack or lunch side dish.

If you’re looking for a recipe for salad that works as an entree, try a shrimp, crab, or Krab Louie. This classic recipe for salad is a nutritional powerhouse. Use a mix of greens as the bed for this masterpiece. To each serving, add one hard boiled egg, tomato wedges, thinly sliced Spanish onions, arranged around the edges of the bowl. In the center, add 2-3 ounces of your seafood and serve with the traditional 1000 Island dressing.

A chef’s salad bears some similarity to the Louie, works well as an entree and covers the nutritional bases. The main difference between the two is that a Chef’s salad is more of a free-for-all recipe for salad. What goes in to this salad is up to the chef! Here’s an opportunity to use up all those leftover bits of veggies you’ve saved from previous meals. Practically anything goes. Corn, beans, beets, a diced chicken breast or some diced ham comes from your leftovers. Diced onions, sliced radishes, a couple of sliced raw mushrooms or celery sticks and you’ve got a hearty, satisfying meal. Add some garlic bread and everyone’s happy. Plus, you’ve used up some leftovers that might have gone to waste.

The Caesar salad is a classically elegant recipe for salad, which can be used as a first course or as a main dish. Tear up pieces of hearts of Romaine, add a few tablespoons of minced anchovies per serving, grate or shave fresh Parmesan over the dish. Sprinkle with croutons and serve with Caesar dressing.

So there you have five generic salad styles, all healthy and all delectable. This is not to say there’s no room on the menu for the simple tossed salad. Bon Appetit!

Games For Girls

Games For Girls

Mixed messages are everywhere today. Though this applies to both sexes, the images and ideas that girls can get that lead them in the wrong direction are much more prominent. As the mother or father of a girl, you have to pay a bit more attention about what they are seeing, learning, and doing as they grow up as these things will shape who they are as adults. When it comes to games for girls, there are some out there that are going to be good for them, and some that should be avoided at all costs. Before you buy games or allow them to find some online, think about your values and what you want them to learn.

Some games for girls are going to be all about fun, and as long as that is what you see in the game, there is no harm in them playing these games. These are often games that boys and girls alike can play and what they teach is something that every child can learn. These things might be sharing, taking turns, simple math or reading, and how to work towards winning but to also lose gracefully. These are lifelong lessons, but they can begin with simple games for girls when they are younger.

What you may not want to allow them to do is to play too many games that are all about fashion, boys, and being popular. There is nothing wrong with a game or two like this, but it should not be the main theme of all of the games that they play. Clothes are nice, and having a lot of friends are nice, but some girls put too much emphasis on these things and that makes them rather selfish and shallow when they get older. Allow a few fun games like these, but make sure you find quality games for them to play otherwise so they have balance ? and balance is the key.

Some games are a bit too graphic for younger children, girls in particular, yet they are out there online for just about anyone who wants to sign up. If your daughter is looking for games for girls online, see if you can help her when she looks them up and chooses what she wants to play. That way you know she is not getting into a game that has her killing people or stealing money ? that sort of thing. If you find her playing that sort of game, talk to her about it. You can tell from the conversation if she is taking it well or if it is something she should stop doing. Avoid her starting these games if you can, but if not, do damage control.

There are some games for girls out there that teach very positive lessons and have great themes that all parents can agree are good for their children. No matter what games you allow them to play otherwise, try to find room in your game time for these games. Some teach girls how to build their self esteem, that they are important, and that they can do great things with their lives. Those are the most important lessons and sometimes parents do not know how to say those things to their girls. With a little searching, you can find games for your daughters that back up what you are trying to say ? loud and clear.

Does a Macintosh OS Give Early Adopters Problems Too ?

Does a Macintosh OS Give Early Adopters Problems Too ?

Any time a new operating system comes out, experienced users resolve to not rush out and get ahead of the groove. They decide to take it slow, until the trailblazers have tripped over a few problems and phoned the company to get the bugs ironed out. With Apple’s legendary bug-free Macintosh OS approach though, are users immune to early adopter problems? Well as it happens, programming an operating system is such a tough business not even Apple gets a free pass. The first few weeks after the release of Snow Leopard was pretty hectic for all the Genius Bars across the world, so fast did the problems fly. And some of these were not even new problems – they had been around ever since Macintosh OS 10.5 that still hadn’t found a solution.

One such long-standing (three-year old) problem, is the Finder Spotlight one. The problem is that in the Finder, the Spotlight results are not able to display an extra column as needed. The Spotlight results do offer you columns you can customize; but if you want to sort by size, label, or anything else, you’re out of luck. You will still have to look to HoudaSpot for that. And you still can’t use custom colors with Finder. The last Macintosh OS took out a very useful Bluetooth function that OS X 10.4 had – the ability to send Bluetooth text messages. They took it away in 10.5 and today, it is still missing in action in Snow Leopard. But these are the old problems. Let us look at some of the brand-new ones.

Let us say that you have a multi-touch trackpad that you wish to use with Snow Leopard. You use a swiping motion with four fingers to display the desktop and then do it backwards with your fingers still there on the trackpad to bring the windows back up. But That will just make the Macintosh OS show the desktop over again. Snow Leopard needs you to remove your fingers off the trackpad each time. Snow Leopard’s services have had an upgrade, and this makes them buggy. According to the spec sheet, the services are supposed to be offered on Contextual menus and also from the conventional Services menu. It does happen, but at times it doesn’t – at all in a predictable fashion.

Other problems in this Macintosh OS seem to echo the kind of trouble Vista had with driver compatibility when it first released two and a half years ago. Lots of people using HP LaserJet printers have found that their new Macintosh OS just does not recognize them. Apple had no solution when the problem started, and HP took quite a while to get a driver out. Some printers worked over USB but not over AirPort, and others worked if you would uninstall and reinstall things. People assume that it never matters what generic components you use to upgrade your Mac; if you want a new hard drive for instance, does it really matter what major brand you bought as long as it was SATA? Unfortunately, the Macintosh can be really sensitive in these matters. If you upgrad your Mac with generic RAM, Snow Leopard will often get you for this with the Spinning Wheel of Death.

On Macintosh OS forums, there are complaints stretching for miles over strange erratic behavior. Basically they recommend that you not use Norton or McAfee antivirus, Unsanity and a few older items of software. Of course Mac devotees don’t like to hear about the bugs on their awesome machines; perhaps they like to view them as the exceptions that prove the rule. But maybe they are right.

Be sure your girl’s shoes fit right: poorly fitted shoes cause medical problems down the road!

Be sure your girl’s shoes fit right: poorly fitted shoes cause medical problems down the road!

As every parent knows, keeping kids in clothing and shoes takes a big bite out of your total budget. With clothes, you can save by using hand-me-downs and shopping the consignment, thrift and discount stores. However, when it comes to your girl’s shoes, you’ve got to be a bit more careful. Whereas boy’s shoes tend to be plain ? and shaped like the child’s foot ? girl’s shoes, especially the dressy styles, come with pointy toes, which begin to narrow at the base of the big toe. Poorly fitting shoes can cause a lot of problems for those quickly growing bones, which can show up years later in bunions, hammertoes and other painful and needless bone deformations, which may require surgery to correct. Here we’ve got some guidelines on how to be sure your girl doesn’t end up with bone problems by the time she’s in her teens.

Before you ever begin to check out shoe styles, ask the shoe salesperson to use a shoe fitting device (all shoe stores have one) to determine the correct width and length of your child’s foot. Doing this step before starting to make selections helps avoid a disappointed child who finds the ‘perfect’ shoe, her heart’s desire, only to discover it’s not available in her size. After her feet have been measured, ask the salesperson to show you several styles of the type of girl’s shoes you need, be it tennies, boots or dress shoes. If the shoes will be worn with socks, have your girl wear, or bring a pair of socks suited to the shoe. The socks will make a considerable difference in the fit of the shoe!

Always try on both shops before testing for a good fit. It’s common for people to have one foot to be just a tad larger than the other, usually averaging about a ? inch difference between the two. You want to go with the shoe size that fits the larger foot.

Shopping for girl’s shoes can be a little more difficult than with boys. Perhaps girls are just born with fashion in their genes and shoe manufacturers know that. Girl’s shoes come with an array of decorations and ‘features’ not found on boy’s shoes, such as fashion straps, bows, little heels and those pointy toes, making the selection process more exciting ? and longer.

Be prepared to be firm on certain ‘features’, such as pumps and pointy toes. Explain that those pointy toes squish those rapidly growing bones ? and that they’re quite uncomfortable when worn for even a couple of hours. As for pump, while they may look cute, they can also contribute to a misaligned spine. As proof, offer a reminder of old Aunt May and her long standing back pain. ?You don’t want that sort of condition at your age, do you!? The only viable case for the pointed toe or short pump might be when the shoes will rarely be worn for limited periods of time. Just a couple of hours in such a shoe will probably change your child’s mind on the merits of this type of girl’s shoes. When trying on the shoes, have your girl stand up straight. Feel the width across the ball of the foot to be sure it’s not too tight. Now have the child walk several feet away, so you can observe the heel portion. Her heel should not come up as she walks ? this type of fit results in painful blisters. If the shoe fits well in every other way, you still have two alternatives: ask if the store carries inserts for the heel, or if that shoe comes in a narrower heel size.

Following these guidelines, you and your girl can both be happy. If you can’t find a pair of girl’s shoes that fit ? and passes the fashion test, be willing to go to another shoe store. Establishing the shoe shopping rules, right up front, makes subsequent shoe shopping easier. Remember, you’ll be doing this again in about three months!

Fashion Makeovers

Fashion Makeovers

When you were watching Beauty and the Geek, you know that it was really about seeing how much better the geeks looked after they cleaned up a bit. After that it was about inner beauty and beauties using their brains. The public is obsessed with fashion makeovers?the ?beautiful all along? is a common, almost clich? theme in a lot of TV shows and movies, showing us that in the end, it?s hard to say that outer beauty doesn?t matter. Showing that someone supposedly unattractive could actually be sort of attractive once they wore the right clothes, cut their hair and plastered on some makeup is a different message from expressing that what?s on the inside counts more than what meets the eye. Not to say that this is necessarily vapid and shallow. Well, it sort of is and we?re definitely guilty of overemphasizing and objectifying beauty, but inherently, there?s nothing wrong with pleasing the eyes.

So, we admit that we like fashion makeovers. We?re fascinated with before and afters?we like to goggle over how they went from this to that in an ugly duckling to swan kind of way. But why do we goggle so much? It could be the shock factor, or maybe it gives the rest of us hope. Admittedly, it can be pretty inspirational to see someone with low esteem transform into someone confident about themselves with some help from a team of beauticians.

But the flip side of fashion makeovers is that in a way, they?re saying that you?re not okay the way you are. Take ?What Not To Wear,? which basically ambushes people and informs them that the way they dress is so bad that it?s offending their friends and the rest of society, all on live television. By the end of the program you can see that it really was for the better and that the person is really happy with the transformation, but at the same time you?re probably glad it?s them and not you on the show. And you wonder if there were any victims who refused to be on the show and then lashed out at their ?friends.?

It?s possible to say that giving someone a makeover is about bringing inside beauty to the outside rather than changing who they are. To be fair, along with the snarkiness Stacy and Clinton often praise certain physical attributes in their victims and try to emphasize them, showing that the issue here is not the person per se, but how they?re dressing. So you can feel a little better knowing that the problem isn?t you, but your awful fashion sense. But even if radical fashion makeovers are well meaning, we?d often rather see them makeover someone else.

Steam cooking your foods for maximum nutritional value and taste!

Steam cooking your foods for maximum nutritional value and taste!

With all our modern kitchen gadgetry, including the microwave, slow cooker and convection ovens, it’s easy to get that hot and delicious meal on the table as conveniently and quickly as possible. For most home cooks, time is at a premium ? we rush home from work and set about getting that meal on the table, pronto! However, we’ve also got to consider delivering food that gives you the most bang for your buck, nutritionally speaking. Steam cooking is the ultimate cookery technique.

Steam cooking, as a method, also protects the nutrients, color and flavor of many foods. Let’s see how you can use the steam cooking method to produce meals that your family will love and which are easy and quick to prepare. Sound good? It gets even better. Using the steam cooking method, you can cook up big batches in the do-ahead fashion, freezing portions for future meals, with no loss of nutrients or flavor. Does it get any better than that?

Electric steamers are now a common appliance, available for an inexpensive price, ranging from $10-$20. This handy little gadget comes in a variety of sizes. With this simple appliance, you can cook veggies, rice, fish or poultry, to perfection.

There’s another type of steam cooker, available in Japanese and Chinese kitchen ware shops. This one consists of stacking, round Bamboo baskets, allowing steam cooking of several foods at once. The baskets are usually sold separately, along with a Bamboo lid. Each basket has a screen across the bottom, to allow the steam to rise through each basket. The sides of the basket are tightly woven to prevent the steam escaping. The lid is solid and tightly woven to cap the baskets and keep the steam circulating while cooking. You place the filled baskets over a pot of boiling water and set the tightly fitting bamboo lid on the top basket. The steam rises and recirculates through the baskets. This centuries-old kitchen ware produces an entire meal in minutes, using just a single burner on your stove. Cleanup is a snap. As for storage, you can save valuable cupboard space, while adding a nice decorative touch to your kitchen ? hang each basket on a cup hook on the wall.

When choosing between an electric steamer and the bamboo steamer, keep in mind that, with an electric steamer, you are limited to cooking one item at a time. The bamboo steamer allows you to cook several foods at once. For example, if you’re making a rice dish that includes veggies and fish, why not cook everything at once? The rice goes in the bottom basket, with the veggies in the middle and the fish in the top basket. When you purchase a bamboo steamer, ask the shop for a pamphlet which details the proper use and placement of foods, if one is not included with the baskets.

It’s easy to see the many advantages of using the steaming method to cook a variety of foods, particularly in the case of veggies. Steam cooking recirculates the hot moisture, within the cooker, as opposed to boiling, where up to 90% of the nutrients are lost in the cooking water. The steaming method retains most of the nutrients, along with the color and brightness of your veggies. You save time in both cooking and cleanup. Hooray for speedy cooking and maximum nutrition!

What do you do for fun and excitement? Wait! Let me guess. You either flip on the TV, surf the net, or head out to the local movie theater with a friend. Does this just about cover it? Okay, just to be clear, I’m not bashing you in any way. This is what a lot of Americans do these days. I call these things lazy activities. I say this because there’s hardly any imagination involved. What you need is something that stimulates your mind. Something that gets you off your bum and in the game of life. Maybe that something is role playing games. If you’ve never taken the time to try it, now’s your big chance.

The subject at-hand is role playing games, otherwise known as RPGs. But we’re not quite hardcore enough to call them that, are we? But hey, it’s not like you NEVER heard of role playing games before. In all likelihood you have. Maybe you’ve played Clue in a fashion such as this. I know I did with my family as a child. It was a blast. Then there was Dungeons and Dragons. Sadly this role playing game got a terrible reputation from a few odd individuals who took it a bit too far. You know there always has to be someone like this. People love to believe in supernatural worlds and special powers. Heck, there’s probably some dolt out there pretending to be Neo from “The Matrix” right now. I’ll bet he even calls his father Morpheus and him girlfriend Trinity. You never know! Anyway, someone poor soul was killed, while playing the Dungeons and Dragons role playing game. Things got a little too intense and people began to believe they actually were the character they were playing. Go figure!

Naturally we now have the option of indulging in online role playing games. This was bound to happen sooner or later. Basically life as we know it has converted to cyberspace in some way or another. However, for all of you energetic personalities out there, try your hand at a real live-action role playing game. Get together with a group of friends and test the waters. I guarantee you’ll have an utter blast doing so. I know always do! And you actually get to use your imagination.
