Examining Free Trade

Examining Free Trade

Ever since The North American Free Trade Agreement, free trade has been a topic of debate in many American households. There are many different reasons for this. One of them is that trade regulation affects our economy greatly. On the one hand, free trading lowers prices. On the other hand, it also decreases job security. Another reason for the increasing interest is that more and more people are becoming involved in investment nowadays. With free online trading, playing the stocks is now something that, for the first time ever, middle-class America is able to do.

One of the biggest areas of trade debate is globalization and human rights. People on both sides of the free trade debate say that they advocate better human rights and working conditions for people everywhere. Pro-trade groups say that bringing increased economic opportunities to countries give them an incentive to modernize. They become more democratic, open, and free. People on the other side, however, say that trade deregulation actually increases human rights abuses. They point out that powerful companies are more able than ever before to exploit the rights of workers, threatening them with losing their jobs if they dare organize to ask for better wages. Whatever side you agree with, the debate is not likely to go away soon. If anything, it will only get bigger.

As a matter of fact, with the World Trade Organization, free trade has become a worldwide issue like never before. There are now major international organizations dedicated to nothing but the regulation of trade, and with the power to enforce their laws. For some people this is scary, but for others is the beginning of the new era of opportunity. Next time you trade stocks, think about what those numbers represent. Many of those companies have workers on nearly every continent, producing millions or even billions of dollars worth of goods every year. People almost anywhere in the world can buy the stocks and have a share of those companies. It is pretty mind blowing, once you start to think about it.

As a matter of fact, thinking about free trade isn’t only important to make you an informed citizen. It is also crucial if you want to be a good stock trader. A lot of people get involved in free online trading without an understanding of international markets. They simply think that they can get rich quick without knowing anything about the way finance works. In reality, the more you understand about international finance, the better you will be at investing.

Meaning Of Words

Meaning Of Words

There is a popular attitude in this country among a certain misinformed segment of the population that the meaning of words is somehow fixed in stone. It is just amazing how many people believe this. People act as if words have one single definition which has always been will never change until the end of time as we know it. In reality, however, the meanings of words are highly malleable. Meaning changes depending on who is saying the words, what day it is, what situation they are in, and any one of hundreds of other factors.

I think I sensed this when I was a kid. My parents were very into training us to be resourceful children, so when we would ask for the meaning of words, they would have us look them up. Looking up words in the dictionary as a child was initially confusing to me. A lot of the time, the meaning of a word as it was explained in the dictionary didn’t quite match up with the book I was reading. Slowly but surely, I began to realize that the explanations of meaning were only approximate. They worked in some cases, but did not work in others.

As a linguist, I have dedicated my life to the meaning of words. I’m fascinated by definitions and the way they shift based on different cultures and subcultures. If you take a word like liberal, terrorist, freedom, faith, enemy, or anyone of thousands of politically contested words, you can see how people intentionally distort meaning to serve their purposes. The problem is that many people never really think about the meaning of words. They don’t understand that the language we use is intentionally manipulated behind the scenes, because they don’t understand that language is malleable. I find this endlessly frustrating.

Still, I am somewhat reassured by the fact that, for many children, an understanding of the meaning of words is a simple as opening up a dictionary. A love of language can start in early childhood, and can last a lifetime. This is why I’m careful to always get dictionaries for all of my young relatives. I may not be remembered as that cool uncle who got them a video game, but I might inspire something far more precious and ultimately more enjoyable than a few hours of gaming: I might inspire a lifetime of learning. And in my opinion, that’s one of the most precious things you can give.

Finding the Lowest APR Credit Card

December 24th, 2009

Finding the Lowest APR Credit Card

I’m trying to manage my finances as best I can. I don’t often splurge on unnecessary purchases, and I make sure I tuck some money away into a savings account every time I receive my paycheck. I’m also trying to live by the rule that if I can’t pay for an item in full, I can’t buy it. This works for the most part, but there are inevitably some situations where I absolutely need to charge something — like last month when my car broke down and I had to spend nearly $500 on repairs. So I figure it would be a good idea to have the lowest APR credit card available to use for these emergencies.

When I was just starting out on my own after college, I applied for several cards and simply took whichever ones accepted me. I had no other choice in the matter. But now that I’m financially stable, I can reap the rewards of my good standing by getting the lowest APR credit card out there. I’m not going to worry about other perks and features right now. I just want to make sure that I don’t end up paying through the nose in high interest rates on my monthly balance. The type of savings that the lowest APR credit card can yield is worth far more to me than extra frequent flyer miles or whatever.

Finding the lowest APR credit card can be difficult because of all the fine print I have to sift through. Each bank or issuer has their own terms and conditions, and sometimes it’s hard to make sense of all the legalese. Plus, many of these issuers offer special introductory rates that make it seem like they have the lowest APR credit card around, but once the grace period ends, the huge fees begin. So I’ve got my work cut out for me regarding my search.

Fortunately, there are some helpful websites that can help cut through most of the undesirable options, leaving me with far fewer cards to research. These sites often list the “bottom line” features of particular cards, and alert you to any potential rate hikes that you should be aware of. Moreover, they often highlight the lowest APR credit card that each bank or issuer offers, and have an application form right on the site so you can see what the eligibility requirements are. This makes it easy to apply on the spot if you discover something you like.

Despite our best intentions, almost all of us will someday find ourselves in circumstances where we need to charge a purchase because we simply don’t have the cash to cover the cost. That’s why it’s important to be prepared for this circumstance by having the lowest APR credit card in your wallet just in case!

Children and books as lifelong friends: a love of reading produces informed adults!

With the alarming rate of illiteracy in the U.S. today, it’s imperative that parents introduce children to books at an early age. It should be a fact that children and books go together like two (happy) peas in a pod. We can make that happen. A love of reading encourages an inquisitive mind, critical thinking skills, helps develop a sense of humor, increases a desire for knowledge and moral values. Books can help a child learn empathy and compassion for others.

Children’s story books form the perfect introduction between children and books. Those nap time and bed time stories with toddlers form the basis of many a happy memory, which lasts into adulthood. Who would have thought that you’d remember Mom or Dad reading ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’ or ‘Lord of the Rings’, decades later? Yet, probably each of us does have such memories, fond recollections of time spent reading and imagining, before we ever learned to read.

Illustrations provide the bridge to the words of the story. Preschoolers are fascinated by the pictures which visually tell the story, from page to page. Children and books thus become the best of friends. Soon, your child becomes curious to find out how to read the words themselves. You can encourage this process subtly, occasionally linking a word on the page to the portion of the illustration that pertains to a word or idea. For example, tonight’s bedtime story is ‘Alligay Saves the Stars’. The story has numerous references to this cute little flying Alligator, trying to retrieve his boomerang from the starry sky. ?Look, aren’t the stars beautiful? You want to see which word means star?? The answer will likely be ?Yes!? ?Look at that big smile on Alligay’s face! Here’s where the word smile is. Yep, a great big smile!?

Before long, your toddler will begin to understand that the words you read relate to real objects and ideas. Words then become almost like magic. Surely, your child has, at some time or another, begged for ?…just one more story, please!? If it’s at all possible, try to never refuse these requests. This is how children and books become fast friends. When the time comes and they’re ready to learn their ABCs, you’ll have an eager pupil who now understands the power he or she has within their grasp.

Starting an early relationship between children and books does form a bond that lasts a lifetime. Frequent story reading sessions and trips to the library becomes an enjoyable past time and habit. As kids get older, they have a desire to expand their knowledge through reading. By the time they’re in third or fourth grade, you may find them choosing a book from the library in an area that’s of special interest to them. A book on frogs or astronomy. The point is, you’ve guided them to a point where they actively pursue knowledge through reading.

Such a child grows up to be a literate and well informed adult. This is undeniably ‘a good thing’.

Teacher?s Costumes For Halloween

Teacher?s Costumes For Halloween

Though anyone can wear costumes for Halloween each year, there are some that may have to when they really would not do it otherwise. Some of these people are teachers. These teachers that teach in high school may do it for the fun of it, but not all of them are going to feel so inclined. However, when it comes to teaching in elementary schools, children respond better when their teachers have taken the time to dress up for the day just as they have. There are some great themes that teachers can use when they are not sure what to get.

You can always go with costumes for Halloween that children are going to relate to a teacher. That might mean going as a big apple, as most children have heard that some teachers love to get apples, even if it really only happens on television and on the movies. You can also be things that can be found in the classroom. See if you can find costumes for Halloween that are of a ruler, pencil, crayon, or anything else of which you can think. These are always big hits, especially in grades K-2 – though older kids in third and forth grade will love them too – if you are a bit more imaginative.

When it comes to older children, there are always teachers that the children love, but also have a hard time with. They may have nicknames for them that they think the teachers are unaware of. You can really show that you have a great sense of humor by coming up with costumes for Halloween that reflect that supposedly unknown nickname. No matter how they feel, they are going to love that you were cool enough to wear it. And with kids, you know nothing is more important than cool.

Otherwise, teacher?s costumes for Halloween can be anything that you want, but you have to remember to where you are wearing it. You have to follow the same dressing guidelines that you would on any other day of the year. Skip over sexy, and save that for your adult parties away from the school kids. You don?t want to do anything that has an adult theme to it, even if you think they won?t get it. The other teachers might, but they will not think much of you for wearing it to school. Have fun with your costumes for Halloween, just remember to keep it PG-13 at the very least.

Costume Ideas for Couples

Going to a Halloween party with a date whether your are in a new relationship, a marriage or just friends there are plenty of great costume ideas for couples. What you need to consider is if you want to spend a lot of money for amazing rental costumes or spend a little for the homemade kind? Either way you?re sure to get plenty of attention by putting some of these costume ideas for couples to work this Halloween.

The first obvious costume idea for couples is to go as each other. If you?ve been together for some time and all of your friends know exactly what to expect from your sense of fashion style then it would be easy to switch roles and essentially wear what the other would wear. A wig and fake moustache where appropriate will seal the deal. If you don?t want to go as each other you can still switch genders for a lot of laughs. Having him dress as a classic peroxide blonde femme fatale and her dress as a tough gangster type is a fun costume idea for a couple.

Another costume idea for couples is to go through your closet for all of those outfits you were once happy to wear but are now embarrassed by. Perhaps there was a disco or hippy phase in your past that you can bring back to life. You could even go so far as to pull out the wedding dress and tuxedo to relive that special day. But don?t stop there. With some easily applied theatrical make-up you can go as zombie bride and groom. In fact, you can even go as zombie quarterback and zombie cheerleader. Every costume for couples goes great with zombie make-up.

If your budget allows, there are some sweet costume ideas for couples that involve professional looking outfits. You can explore your superhero side by pairing up the great comic book legends such as Superman and Lois Lane, Spiderman and Mary Jane, or Batman and Catwoman. There are also the classic literary costume ideas for couples such as Alice and the Mad Hatter, Romeo and Juliet, Scarlet and Rhett and the ever popular Adam and Eve.

No matter which Halloween costume ideas for couples you choose make sure you both agree to the concept and that you take plenty of pictures. Who knows, maybe your Halloween costume will make the perfect Christmas card!

Get More Privacy with Room Divider Screens

October 24th, 2009

Get More Privacy with Room Divider Screens

Anyone who has ever had to share a house, apartment, or dorm with roommates can tell you that privacy is a very hot commodity in those situations. It’s one thing to live in a crowded space with your own family, but quite another when thrown together with virtual strangers. Nevertheless, if you’re forced to share cramped quarters because of tight finances, then one way to make the arrangement somewhat more tolerable is to set up room divider screens in strategic locations.

Room divider screens (also known as shoji) are essentially foldable partitions that provide at least a small measure of privacy in your living space. They’re made from a variety of materials, and come in plain or decorated versions. Most commonly, the frame is constructed of some kind of wood. On the expensive side, you can purchase room divider screens made from mahogany, cherry, walnut, or oak. If you want to save a bit of money, you can go for something like pine. In addition to wood, shoji frames can be made from bamboo or metal.

The screen portion is also comes in a wide array of materials. Traditional room divider screens that follow the Japanese manufacturing style might use a light, translucent paper to form the screen. But modern creations tend to favor sturdier materials such as canvas or nylon to yield a greater amount of privacy. In addition, some current designs incorporate the use of wood shutters or blinds for an impenetrable look, while others include pockets or pouches that can be used for storage. Talk about functionality! I’ve even seen room divider screens that have different size photo frames along the panels where you can display your favorite pictures.

Many room divider screens come with designs printed on the panels. Here again, you’ll have a huge selection of themes or motifs to choose from, though Asian or Oriental designs remain the most popular. Many times, the screen portion will be decorated with Chinese characters or peaceful scenes of nature. A waterfall, perfect ocean wave, or delicate lotus flower are all favorites when it comes to decorating room divider screens. If none of these suit your taste or if you want to personalize your shoji, then you can buy a plain one and paint it yourself.

Inexpensive room divider screens can be found at most furniture stores or at online boutiques. At the low end of the scale, you can get one of these products for about $50. But there are certainly far more expensive options as well, with the most opulent, handcrafted pieces priced at $600 or more. Obviously, the final purchasing decision comes down to a matter of taste and budget, though for basic privacy needs, a cheap, simple shoji should work just fine.

Glow In The Dark

When you have children to shop for, it is often hard to know what to get. Though I have no problems shopping for my own daughter, I do have trouble buying for my friend?s little boy. For some reason, I have a hard time getting something for boys that they may like. Usually when I am at a loss as to what to get, I end up findings something that is either glow in the dark or something that is a game. If I can find both, I am good to go.

Children love things that glow in the dark, probably because they think it is magic. If they are not yet old enough to understand why something will glow in the dark, they think it surely must be something magical. To have that magic in their hands is something that most kids find most enjoyable. They will often spend a lot of time in their dark room entranced by the mystery of the glow. I once found my daughter in her closet laughing and carrying on about her new glowing stick she got when we went to a parade. It was so quiet I was sure something was wrong. As it turned out, she was just enjoying the new toy.

Some of the most popular glow in the dark items are the stars and planets you can hang from the ceiling. Kids aren?t the only ones that like them, as there are many adults who have them as well. They are really great because they are lightweight enough to be stuck to the ceiling with a tacky substance without falling down, and they glow in the dark just enough to look very cool after the lights go down. They generally only glow for a little while, but will last long enough to keep your children happy.

There are many other items that glow in the dark you can buy, and you might find some great stuff if you look online for some different ideas. You can get tshirts and glow sticks, or you can find tape you can use on just about anything. The best thing about glow in the dark tape is that is can be used for safety reasons as well as for fun. You can use it to line your kid?s shoes or the end of their jacket to keep them safe if they must be walking outside after dark.
