Studies are constantly being released concerning America’s health. Yep, the facts are in, ladies and gentlemen. We’ve got a long way to go. This can’t be a surprise to anyone. Stop what you’re doing, and glance about at those amongst you. Are they ripped and lean, or do the majority of them sport a spare tire. Some of the ones I see on a daily basis appear to have a spare SUV tire. That’s not a good thing. How can this pandemic be remedied? Well, there’s pretty much only one way. It’s all about proper diet and fitness. These two imperatives must be addressed seriously. If you have been letting your health slide, it’s time to STOP. All it takes to get started is a little bit of knowledge and some basic equipment. Fortunately you get to choose from free weights, to aerobic supplies, to yoga balls, to fitness machines. It’s all out there if you just look for it.

I spent most of my life not caring about fitness. There wasn’t anything to motivate me. Even today, I’m 31 years old and have a fast metabolism. Therefore I’m never overweight. Typically I eat a certain amount each day to maintain my weight. Now, on the other hand; I also want to be certain I’m actually healthy. This hit me a few years back. I think it was watching all those UFC matches. That stuff gets me psyched and ready for action. Suddenly I was shopping for free weights and fitness machines. I wanted to have everything I needed to stay fit from home. Personally folks, I can’t stand the gym scene. Their fitness machines are gross. Just think about the process. Someone sweats all over a machine, and then you get on it. Nice huh? Yeah, and that’s even if you’re able to get on the darn machine. Sometimes the popular fitness machines stay occupied for hours. It can truly be an irksome process.

If you are looking to get in shape, then I suggest some brief research first. What are you looking to improve? Are you craving a total body workout, or maybe just wanting those abs in shape? Any way you cut it, you can learn all you need to on the web. Find out the proper forms for each exercise regime. This is crucial. Also you may want to check out Dick’s Sporting Goods for discounted fitness machines and free weights.

Martial Arts Movies

One of the most action packed genres in the cinema is Martial Arts movies. They have an avid following, whether they are big budget Hollywood features or low budget cult films. The Hong Kong produced films are well known and they inspired American and European enthusiasts to make their own films. Some actors have got into Martial Arts and used it for their career and some Martial Arts experts have become involved in the movie industry.

The major stars of the genre are heroes to the fans. Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li each bring their own personality and fighting techniques to the story. Western stars Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal further popularized the films. What started as a cult, crossed over to the mainstream and spin off merchandise, such as posters is big business. Disciplines such as Karate and Kung Fu gained lots of recruits who had been turned on by what they saw in Martial Arts movies.

The most influential exponent of Kung Fu and martial arts in general was undoubtedly Bruce Lee. Born in San Francisco and raised in Hong Kong, he was handsome and had charisma in addition to perfecting an explosive fighting style. He put great emphasis on fitness. Sadly he died at the young age of 32 and became a legend. His most popular film was Enter the Dragon in 1973 in which he plays a man called Lee, a Martial Arts practitioner who investigates a drug gang. John Saxon co-starred.

The same year brought the release of Way of the Dragon. This Martial Arts movie was unusual in that Bruce Lee was the director and writer. It was also unusual because it was an action comedy. Lee stars as Tang Lung, who visits relatives in Rome and becomes involved in fighting a criminal gang. They need to hire someone to defeat him so they call on Colt, played by Chuck Norris. Norris, a professional Karate champion, and Lee delight the fans with a fight scene against the backdrop of Rome’s Coliseum.

In 1994, Jet Li made a remake of one of Bruce Lee’s films called The Chinese Connection. The new version was titled Fist of Legend and Li played a character called Chen Zen. The story is set in Shanghai under Japanese military occupation in 1937 and involves Chen Zen trying to prove that his old Kung Fu master, Hou was murdered.

Taiwan born director Ang Lee has made many different kinds of films, including Hulk and Brokeback Mountain. In 1999, the release of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made a huge impact. This was a Martial Arts movie that incorporated fantasy fight sequences and a love story. It won the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award. It showed that this genre could have brilliant cinematography and special effects. The scenery was stunning. Chow Yun Fat stars as Li and Michelle Yeoh co-stars as Yu. Two warriors hunt for a sword with magic properties that has been stolen. Zen warriors are seen to bend the physical world to their will as they float through the air and walk on water.

Activities For Seniors

Activities For Seniors

More and more, scientific studies are showing that an active senior is a healthy senior. Between physical activities for seniors, staying mentally active, and keeping up a healthy social circle, older people can prolong healthy living by years or even decades. With all the attention people put into good nutrition and exercise when they’re young, it is amazing that senior activities have escaped attention until recently. Fortunately, things are changing, and changing quickly! Within a decade, active seniors will be the norm and the days of old people sitting bored in front of the TV all day will be a distant memory.

Choosing appropriate activities for seniors is easier than you might think. The main thing is that seniors live in or have access to facilities where social activities are organized. A lot of senior homes nowadays have poker nights, bingo games, water aerobics, and many other types of physical fitness activities and social gatherings that seniors enjoy. Sometimes, community centers go one better than this and take seniors out by the bus load to enjoy field trips to local hot spots for the elderly. Gambling halls are popular, as are certain scenic destinations and even amusement parks. Senior citizens activities are as diverse as the people who partake in them.

Unfortunately, the decreased mobility of seniors means that if activities are not nearby, there is often no way to get to them. This is why so many older people are choosing to retire into active living communities where they can have the help they need and still maintain a healthy life in a supportive community. Many of these places are pioneering and leading the way in activities for seniors. My grandmother actually recently moved into a center that has a senior martial arts program ? the first in the state. They focus on internal arts such as tai chi, allowing seniors to reap the benefits of physical training without overtly exerting themselves. I have to say that grandmother has actually gotten really good at tai chi recently. She moves with a grace and style that I didn’t know she would be capable of anymore. It’s as if staying active has made her younger.

And in the end, that is what activities for seniors are all about. A lot of people are starting to believe that growing old is more about attitude that it is about physical condition. Often, when people start to give up hope and resign themselves to aging and dying, their health starts to decline rapidly. Seniors who stay happy and active don’t have time to get sick. Don’t get me wrong ? they still develop illnesses, but many of them do a lot better than they would otherwise.

5 Star Hotels

5 Star Hotels

Stars are often used to give ratings to services and products, and typically the system consists of 1 to 5 stars. 1 is the lowest, and 5 is the best?5 stars good, 1 star bad. So if a movie got a rating of 4 stars, you might be willing to give it a try, and if a restaurant received a rating of 2 stars you might consider eating somewhere else. After all, even if watching a movie and eating out can both potentially be negative experiences and a waste of money, a bad movie can be something to laugh about while food poisoning isn?t.

The star ratings system is arbitrary, and there?s no standard star system that everybody uses. The way that the ratings work can differ from country to country, within a local district, from different services and personal preference. Restaurant and movie ratings may also make use of other symbols like letter grades or icons. But despite the flexible nature of ratings systems, hotels almost always use a star rating and it?s well established that 5 star hotels are the most luxurious and provide the most quality services. 1 star and 2 star hotels aren?t necessary run down and overrun with rats, but the provisions will be limited. A 1 star hotel will provide you with the basic necessities like a bed and bathroom, essentially providing you just with a place to stay. 2 star hotels will offer additional services like a phone and a TV. 3 star hotels will provide room service, valet parking, a fitness center, a pool, and breakfast, sometimes lunch and dinner as well. 4 stars has more furnishing and dining and entertainment options, and finally 5 star hotels are the whole shebang with jacuzzis, concierge, gourmet food and the like. You don?t just stay at a higher end hotel; you enjoy more accommodating services that make your visit a comfortable and entertaining experience.

But of course, to enjoy all of the extra perks you?ll have to pay, literally. 5 star hotels are much more expensive than standard hotels, although some might argue that you actually save money by booking trips at luxurious hotels. This is because you?re getting a lot considering the amount you?re paying. Overall, however, if you consistently stay at 5 star hotels, you?ll definitely spend more money than you would be if you consistently booked standard hotels. So you might consider a 5 star hotel only when you want to splurge and indulge yourself, which we should all do once in a while.

The last time that I got a gym membership, it did not work out. It was a pretty reputable gym, and they had some decent fitness exercise equipment, but I just could not convince myself to get over there regularly. Part of it was that I was self-conscious about my body and did not like to workout in front of other people, but that was not all of it. I think that I just did not like to have to get up, head out, and go somewhere to workout. That is why I decided that the best thing to do was to buy myself some home gym equipment.

There are many different kinds of home fitness equipment,. I did not start out buying my gym equipment all at once. Instead, I though that the best thing to do was to keep it simple and basic. First I bought a set of hand weights, a jump-rope, and some gym pants to work out in. I thought that that would give me just enough to do a basic workout, and it turned out that I was right. I could get my heart rate up, have a little bit of strength training with my lifting, and feel like I was getting one step closer to being the trim, fit person that I had always wanted to be.

After a while, however, that gym equipment I had just wasn’t enough anymore. I did enjoy the hand weights, but I wanted to get a better workout. The next thing that I thought was an elliptical machine. Soon after that, I got a Nautilus machine to do some more heavy-duty strength training. Once I got this gym equipment, it felt like my routine was really coming together. I have enough machines and exercises that I can vary it from day-to-day, and I can switch from elliptical to jump rope for the cardiovascular exercises. All in all, it feels pretty good.

Sometimes, it is still a little bit difficult for me to motivate myself to work out. You get home from work, you feel tired and lazy, and you just want to sit around in front of the TV. Knowing that the gym equipment is in your own house, however, makes things easier. You can exercise in your underwear if you want. You never have to get up and go anywhere to stay fit and look great. I look better than I have in years, and feel the same.

What is a Balanced Diet?

January 8th, 2010

What is a Balanced Diet?

I?ve often heard that the key to good health and fitness is combining regular exercise with a balanced diet. Sounds easy enough, but when I stop and think about it, what exactly is a balanced diet?

When I was a child, they told me there were four food groups. Eating well meant eating an equal amount from each food group, I suppose. Actually, they were never very clear about that. The food groups seemed to be more about categorizing food items than about eating a balanced diet. But four is such a balanced number, so somehow it made sense, at the time.

By the time I became an adult and actually had to start caring about nutrition and a balanced diet, the four food groups were a thing of the past. Instead, we had the food pyramid ? again a very balanced graphic representation of food. Pyramids don?t fall over, after all. They?re well balanced. The food pyramid indicated that bread and other carbohydrates should make up the bulk of our diet. Hence it was at the bottom of the pyramid. Above carbohydrates on the pyramid were proteins, then at the top were fats and sugars. So instead of eating the same amount of each food group, now we were to understand that a balanced diet demanded that we favor breads, cereals, pasta and rice.

Of course, that notion of the balanced diet went out the window pretty quickly, when we were told by diet experts that carbs were the enemy. Eating all those starches would make us fat, the new wisdom dictated. We wanted to eat protein and fat, and lots of it. At least, that?s what the Atkins diet recommended. On the other hand, some experts claimed that we should eat a diet made up of 40% carbs, 30% protein and 30% fat. Sounds quite balanced, doesn?t it? Then the South Beach Diet came out, and insisted that not all carbs are equal. We must eat only low glycemic carbs ? whatever that means! According to that approach, the balance in a balancde diet has nothing to do with food groups and everything to do with something called the ?glycemic index.? It was getting too complicated for me.

After years of experimenting with every kind of balance, I?ve discovered that eating a balanced diet is not complicated at all. It just means that you don?t eat too much of any one thing, and you don?t completely cut out any one thing. You know that wisdom your mother and grandmother taught you, so many years ago? Eat your vegetables. Don?t snack between meals. Don?t pig out. Skip dessert most of the time. Next thing you know, you find that you?re eating a balanced diet after all.

Meaning Of Words

Meaning Of Words

There is a popular attitude in this country among a certain misinformed segment of the population that the meaning of words is somehow fixed in stone. It is just amazing how many people believe this. People act as if words have one single definition which has always been will never change until the end of time as we know it. In reality, however, the meanings of words are highly malleable. Meaning changes depending on who is saying the words, what day it is, what situation they are in, and any one of hundreds of other factors.

I think I sensed this when I was a kid. My parents were very into training us to be resourceful children, so when we would ask for the meaning of words, they would have us look them up. Looking up words in the dictionary as a child was initially confusing to me. A lot of the time, the meaning of a word as it was explained in the dictionary didn’t quite match up with the book I was reading. Slowly but surely, I began to realize that the explanations of meaning were only approximate. They worked in some cases, but did not work in others.

As a linguist, I have dedicated my life to the meaning of words. I’m fascinated by definitions and the way they shift based on different cultures and subcultures. If you take a word like liberal, terrorist, freedom, faith, enemy, or anyone of thousands of politically contested words, you can see how people intentionally distort meaning to serve their purposes. The problem is that many people never really think about the meaning of words. They don’t understand that the language we use is intentionally manipulated behind the scenes, because they don’t understand that language is malleable. I find this endlessly frustrating.

Still, I am somewhat reassured by the fact that, for many children, an understanding of the meaning of words is a simple as opening up a dictionary. A love of language can start in early childhood, and can last a lifetime. This is why I’m careful to always get dictionaries for all of my young relatives. I may not be remembered as that cool uncle who got them a video game, but I might inspire something far more precious and ultimately more enjoyable than a few hours of gaming: I might inspire a lifetime of learning. And in my opinion, that’s one of the most precious things you can give.

Lose Weight with a Daily Food Diary

Lose Weight with a Daily Food Diary

Now that I’m 35, I’m trying to get really serious about losing these last (and very stubborn) ten pounds that have been hanging around since my children were born. But with family, work, the kids’ activities — every mom out there knows just what I mean — it seems impossible. I’ve been walking faithfully with the hubby, and trying to make healthy choices when I’m at the grocery store, but it still feels as though I’ve hit a plateau. Thankfully, a friend told me to try a daily food diary, which she described as another helpful weapon in the war against weight gain. I figured I had nothing to lose but a dress size, so I gave it shot.

I’ll admit that at first, the thought of recording every bite I took in a daily food diary felt overwhelming. How could I be sure I wouldn’t forget something I snacked on in the car on the way to soccer practice? Or how about the stolen bite here and there when I’m making dinner for the family, or finishing up a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies? But I realized that that’s the beauty of a daily food diary — it’s a tool that helps you to take into account all the mindless snacking you do during the day. Once you really start to consider all the opportunities you have to say no to those extra calories, you start to feel in control of what you’re eating again!

The Internet is an amazing place to find a daily food diary that will work for you. I found free, customized plans that will help me to monitor everything I eat in a given day with ease. I can track my intake of carbohydrates, fat, and protein, as well as evaluate how that day’s meal choices will help me meet my long-term weight loss goals. And the daily food diary is not the only helpful online tool. Many sites offer fitness journals, virtual support groups, blogs, and other freebies to help with my diet. I even found some healthy (and tasty) recipes, a portable calorie counter that fits right into my purse, and a fast-food cheat sheet to help with those working lunches eaten on the go. Now I can make an informed decision about every meal I eat, and stick much more closely to my diet plan.

I’m seeing real results after these last three weeks. I’ve actually lost seven pounds, and have only three to go in order to reach my goal. Using a daily food diary is a great habit, and it’s helped me to really think about what I’m eating. I’m making healthier choices throughout the day, and learning more about good nutrition than I ever thought possible. Those are habits I hope to keep for the long haul.
