Tips on training your puppy the easy way!

A puppy is always a pleasure to welcome into your home. These cute little rascals are friendly, funny, curious and mischievous, but just like kids – ;} – , they’ve got to be introduced to the ground rules of your home life in order for them to integrate into your family life as easily and pleasantly as possible, to your mutual satisfaction. Training your puppy may sound like an overwhelming prospect ? where do you begin? However, training a puppy need not be arduous and trying. On the contrary, training your new family canine can be easy and fun. Your puppy comes complete with attitude. For the best results and shortest learning curve, all you need to do is apply your lessons consistently, calmly and with a gentle manner. Here are a few tips to get you started, training your puppy the easy way.

When you first bring your puppy home, he’s bound to be excited and curious. Everything is new to him. Before you bring him in the house, lay a few sheets of newspaper down around the house. In his excitement, don’t be surprised if there’s an accident deposited on the floor somewhere. Treating carpets with a water repellent spray, prior to bringing your new family member home, may be a good investment! If a potty accident occurs, don’t flip out and shriek at the poor little puppy … he doesn’t know this is undesirable behavior. Instead, use a low, firm voice, saying ?No, no…?, and get him over to the newspaper. Granted, the deed is already done, but if you don’t scare him with shrill chastisements and excessive hand-wringing, your puppy will soon come to the party, associating the act with the newspaper as a people-pleaser.

One of the coolest characteristics of dogs is that they have an in-built desire to please you, which is certainly not the case with kitties! Keep this fact in mind as you begin training your puppy. He ? or she ? intuitively regards you as the master in this relationship ? unless you give your puppy reason to think otherwise! Never use a heavy-handed approach when training your puppy. If you do, he may dig in his heels or simply become afraid of you and less willing to go along with your program.

Being patient during the all-important potty training period lightens your load in future lessons, such as the ’sit’, ’stay’ and ‘heel’ training sessions. Sure, for you, the potty training is one of the least attractive aspects of training. On the other hand, try thinking of this stage as an opportunity to bond with your new puppy. He’s only doing what comes naturally. Given praise for the ‘right’ behavior is like a ray of sunshine in your puppy’s mind. Eager to please, he’ll learn the ‘correct’ behavior and bask happily in your praise. If he seems a little slow on the uptake, continue to be patient. He’ll get it, eventually. In the process, you’ll find him paying closer attention to your wishes, just for the sheer pleasure of hearing your praise.

During the first few days, allow your puppy to explore, so he becomes familiar with your home. Your puppy training program does require that you keep a sharp eye on him. Chewing on furniture and your daughter’s favorite sweater must be discouraged! The key to success lies in you keeping your cool, interacting with your puppy in calm and measured tones and consistent behavior.

Once you’ve mastered potty training, training your puppy to obey simple commands is a piece of cake. Now, your puppy knows all about the worst offenses. Teaching him to sit becomes easy. With a little biscuit or other treat in hand, push his behind down as you say ?Sit!?. Sitting is natural to a dog, but he’ll certainly love you all the more when he gets a treat for doing something that easy!

Training your puppy is easy, when you exercise patience and give him a lot of love!

Detecting Spyware from your PC

Detecting Spyware from your PC

Is your browser behaving strangely of late? If the answer is yes, then you have likely been infected by a spyware or an adware program. Most of these programs are simply Browser Helper Objects or BHOs that run automatically every time the browser is clicked. These small program snippets help to track the web sites visited and send this data back to the web site owners. This might seem to be a good thing, but when you consider that these programs also collect personal information and sell it to online vendors or use for other malicious activities, then you will want to protect yourself. One way to do this is to use a spyware scanner to remove all these code snippets from your browser and the computer. But how do you know if you have been infected in the first place?

One of the surest ways to know that you have some form of spyware on your system is what is displayed the moment you open your browser. Spyware is easily able to hijack your browser and redirect your first web access to its own portal. Sometimes search results may also be redirected and make it very difficult to return the original home page. When such a situation arises, you need to use a spyware scanner to remove all traces of the program, in both the browser as well as the registry settings from where it is initiated. Depending on which browser is used, some spyware will redirect the visitor to a new location automatically using the Internet Information Service. These tools create pages and redirect the browser to the file sometimes without the user knowledge.

Browser pop ups are another common infection symptom for adware that are intended to increase web traffic and capture email addresses. These pop-ups are a great nuisance since they open above the requested web page. Sometimes spyware can make the computer unusually slow and in extreme cases, computer crashes may occur. Since spyware downloads programs without you ever being aware of it, most people are unaware that they have a spyware program running in the background. Use a spyware scanner to detect these behind-the-scenes programs and flash them out before they cause irreversible damage to your system.

Since spyware is sneaky, even your best efforts at reading symptoms may not be successful. Your computer may be running fine and you may not experience pop ups. The spyware may simply be waiting to steal your credit card information. A spyware scanner is the only way to protect yourself from these forms of malware.

Hasbro Toys

Hasbro toys are some of the hottest must have items because they reach out to a diverse consumer audience, which makes sense considering that Hasbro is internationally one of the biggest toy companies in the market, competing with other big toy companies like Mattel, the creator of the Barbie brand. Hasbro produces toys and games for all ages from toddler to even adult. There are many products you might not have known came from Hasbro?board games like Clue and toys like Mr. Potato Head, for instance. In truth many of these products are owned by other companies, but they are subsidiaries of Hasbro, which means that Hasbro controls their operations and owns all of their products. So when we talk about Milton and Bradley games, Playskool, Tonka, and Tiger Electronics toys, we?re really talking about Hasbro toys and games.

Hasbro headquarters is located in Rhode Island, but today most Hasbro toys are manufactured overseas in China. In its beginnings, Hasbro came up with Mr. Potato Head and GI Joe, and later on My Little Pony. As it subsidized more companies, Hasbro became responsible for Transformers action figures, Candy Land, Jenga, Wizards of the Coast, Star Wars, Twister, Chutes and Ladders, Care Bears, Yahtzee, Play Doh, Pokemon, Zoids, Cabbage Patch Kids, Tinkertoys, Easy Bake Oven, Cranium, Dungeons and Dragons, Scrabble, Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit and you get the idea. It?s practically a monopoly, and they own Monopoly too. Go figure.

So there?s no way that Hasbro is going to miss out on this season, and some of the most sought after Hasbro toys are the Hasbro Playskool Step Start Walk n Ride, Bop It, the Hasbro Games Monopoly Deal Card Game, the Hasbro Playskool Busy Ball Popper, the Transformers Movie 2 Leader Optimus Prime action figure, the Nerf n Strike Raider Rapid Fire CS 35 Dart Blaster, and the Hasbro Nerf n Strike Maverick. All of these are currently on the leading sellers list at Amazon along with other toys produced by Cepia, LeapFrog, Melissa & Doug, Fisher Price and Mattel. Giving Hasbro some competition are the Zhu Zhu Hamster Pets, Twilight Barbies, the Slice and Bake Cookie Set, the LeapFrog Scribble and Write, and the Brilliant Basics Baby?s First Blocks. All of these products will be highly sought after, but Hasbro is bound to have a strong performance in the market and will likely continue to for years to come.

A subscription to an aquarium fish magazine makes a great gift to introduce kids to this fascinating hobby!

A subscription to an aquarium fish magazine makes a great gift to introduce kids to this fascinating hobby!

Aquariums are a great introduction to some of the animal life all around your curious youngsters. Kids love pets! Aquariums are one of the easiest ways to allow children to explore and observe animal life at home. Because kids can get rambunctious, a puppy or kittie may not be the best choice for your novice pet owners. A small animal, with the run of the house, may be accidentally hurt by a child who thinks that little guy is as durable as he or she. On the other hand, aquariums are self contained, with the watching of these animals being the fun.

When you suggest getting an aquarium, explain to the kids that all animals need special care in order to thrive and that, just like other people, deserve respect and good care. In order to set up an aquarium with a healthy, happy population, the kids need to know a few things about their fish.

Before you rush out and buy a complete aquarium setup, get the kids educated and excited about their project. How? Make an exploratory visit to an aquarium shop and let the kids browse the aisles of aquariums and fish. Meanwhile, you talk with a staff member for suggestions on the best, age-appropriate aquarium fish magazines, suitable for teaching youngsters about how to care for fish, the environment they require and the types of fish which get along together. Most aquarium fish magazines have monthly features on particular species of fish, as well as types of equipment which may be needed. The staff member will understand (and applaud) your strategy of educating before buying. You’ll find at least one or two aquarium fish magazines that will pave the way to soon setting up a most excellent and fascinating aquarium.

Get a couple of aquarium fish magazines or booklets, collect your kids and let them spend the rest of the afternoon finding out everything they can about the care of their new pets.

You can also find lots of information on aquariums online, along with some online aquarium fish magazines. The kids will also find articles and tips on setting up and caring for an aquarium environment. You’ll see their enthusiasm grow as they learn ? before long, you’ll have some blossoming aquarium experts!

By this time, the kids may have found a particular aquarium fish magazine they enjoy most. Consider getting a subscription, to keep the learning process going forward.

The kids will doubtless be eager to go and purchase that aquarium and fish as soon as possible. Take them step by step: ask questions like, ?Do you know how many fish a 10-gallon aquarium can hold??, or ?Show me which is your favorite fish so far ? do you know its name, so that we can find it at the aquarium shop?? ?How many times a day should you feed your fish, and, how much?? Once you feel confident the kids have a good handle on caring for their aquarium fish, it’s time to go shopping!

Many kids who start an aquarium find a hobby that lasts a lifetime, definitely a good thing!

Stuffed Animals

Stuffed animals aren?t just the standard teddy bear anymore?now it?s all about the interactive Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters that actually scamper around like the real thing. Roll over and out, Aibo?artificial animal intelligence now comes in the form of hamster stuffed animals that have a trillion times the lifespan of a normal hamster and come with none of the mess or annoying squeaky wheels. The marketable appeal of the Zhu Zhu Hamsters is that it?s like having a pet hamster without actually having one?the idea is that kids learn the responsibility of taking care of a pet without hassle and they don?t have to deal with the death of a beloved companion. You?ve never seen such interactive stuffed animals like these before. Each Zhu Zhu Pet Hamster comes with its own personality and can make a little over 30 different cooing, purring, and other sound effects depending on what situation it?s in. Realistically, they?ll respond when you pick them up and cuddle with them, and simulate going to the bathroom and going to sleep. You can also dress up Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters and accessorize them, which is very difficult to do with real hamsters?you can dress your hamster up like Minnie Mouse or you can give it a surfboard to cruise on. It?s no wonder why Zhu Zhu Pets are so popular and you?ll be likely to have a hard time finding them on the shelves during the shopping season.

But in the end, Zhu Zhu Pet Hamsters are still stuffed animals. They might be close to the real thing, but there?s something about having a real pet that owning a Zhu Zhu Pet can never emulate. Understanding dog behavior leads to a happy relationship with Rover!

Understanding dog behavior leads to a happy relationship with Rover!

You’ve doubtless heard the saying that people who have dogs as pets for a long time, actually develop facial expressions that mimic their dogs, which is why they start to resemble each other! While it makes an amusing story, there is some truth in this old saying. However, it’s the dog who’s doing the imitation, rather than the other way around.

For example, the grouchy old man’s dog may be a lay-around, a fussy and antisocial creature. Not that Rover would bite, he’s just got a disgruntled personality and kind of an Eeyore complex. There’s no fun and play in old Rover, much like his owner. A vivacious teen-aged girl, full of fun and life, has Rover’s offspring, Jingles, as her beloved pet. Both are seen bouncing around the neighborhood, playing Frisbee at the park or going for long walks through the hills, both scampering gleefully in the sun and wind.

Unlike cats, dogs are very loyal to their owners. In a way, understanding dog behavior is much like understanding kid’s behavior. Kids learn by example, and tend to pick up mannerisms and reactions similar to how they see their parents behave. Most dogs never outgrow the kid’s mentality. They don’t exercise good judgment, they’re not very sensible and they pretty much do what they can get away with doing!

Now, children have a good deal more intelligence than dogs do. Through experience and parental guidance, they gain better judgment, which is a primary goal of parenthood. Kids learn to communicate with words and the use of reason and logic. Our dog friends don’t have these advantages. Understanding dog behavior requires that you understand Rover and Jingle’s limitations. Let’s face it, your dog isn’t going to college and will never hold a job! What your dog will do is remain loyal to you, love you and misbehave whenever an enticing occasion arises.

Understanding dog behavior and misbehavior means that you understand that your beloved pet will remain a lifelong pre-adolescent. If Rover has an opportunity to run off with a roast beef, left tantalizingly on the kitchen counter, he’ll do it now, and ten years from now. He’ll never outgrow the urge to chase a Frisbee until his tongue is hanging down by his feet. Your kids and grandkids will be able to stick peanut butter on Rover’s nose forever, with the exact same result. Rover and Jingles love every minute of such silliness. They’ll be running over hill and dale, long after your kids have grown up and left the nest.

Understanding dog behavior involves a certain amount of slacking. Dogs are pirates and, so even though they know what you disapprove of, they will go for it. You’ve got to discipline your dog. A well inflected ?Baaad dog!?, helps curb their natural inclinations. Once you understand dog behavior and the natural limitations, you just learn to live with the down side! Use a gentle and forgiving hand when training your dog. Your dog is going to love you forever, no matter what.

Think about your relationship with your dog. Does he or she reflect your personality? Does your dog friend behave like Tigger or Eeyore? It’s really all up to you. You’re the leader in understanding dog behavior. Put a smile on your face when he steals a cube of butter. A ?Baaad dog!? is still in order.

Ten years from now, your neighbors may notice that you and Rover, or Jingles, resemble one another, in happiness.

Denver Animal Shelter

Most pet owners are responsible and caring but there are unfortunate animals that find themselves lost, abandoned, neglected or the victims of cruelty. There are organizations to help and Denver animal shelters contribute to animal welfare in the city. Most organizations devoted to animal care are non-profit and they rely on donations from the general public. Many shelters are run by volunteers. They will never put a healthy animal down.

The Denver Municipal Animal Shelter is located on Jason Street and deals with hundreds of new dogs, cats, puppies, kittens and other small animals each week. Donations are welcome and are tax deductible. This Denver animal shelter is a part of the Division of Animal Control and operates an adopt a pet scheme for a small fee. Senior citizens are given a discount. In addition to dogs and cats, there are sometimes birds, iguanas, fish, rabbits or snakes. When a dog or cat is adopted, they must be spayed or neutered before the new owner is allowed to take him or her home. The shelter gives dogs the distemper and parvo vaccinatation but the person adopting must organise a rabies vaccination. Cats are given the feline distemper and upper respiratory virus vaccination. In Denver, all cats and dogs aged over 6 months are required by law to be licensed. The shelter has an online facility for obtaining a license.

The Dumb Friends League was founded in 1910 to care for sick and injured animals. They also run an adoption scheme for the animals they rescue. Part of their work at this animal shelter in Denver is to educate the public on how to take care of pets. It is the largest organization of its kind in the Rocky Mountains area. The main shelter is on Quebec Street and there is another one at the Buddy Center in Castle Rock. In addition to placing the dogs, cats, and rabbits etc., with new owners, the shelter also re-unites pets that have been lost with their owners. The shelter also welcomes donations to meet the expense of housing over 25,000 homeless animals each year. Members of the public give money but also supplies, such as pet food, toys, dog and cat collars, pet cushions, grooming tools and office equipment to assist in the day-to-day running. It is also possible to be a foster parent to a pet. This is open to adults and young people aged between 12 and 17 in the Junior Foster Programme. The animal shelter has a gift shop with a range of pet goods, including pet food dishes, car bumper stickers, greeting cards, and tote bags.

The Animal Rescue and Adoption Society on Delaware Street is devoted to the welfare of cats. They operate adoption and foster schemes and will pass a cat on to another animal shelter in Denver if their capacity is full. The shelter is funded from donations and fundraising events. The adoption fee includes spaying or neutering, a cardboard transport carrier, vaccinations, safety collar and identity tag. A microchipping service is available for an additional fee.

Protect Your Home with a DVR Security System

Protect Your Home with a DVR Security System

I like to think that I live in a pretty nice neighborhood, but you just never know when something bad might happen. Whenever I get the weekly community newspaper, I see a bunch of break-ins and robberies listed on the police report pages, and can’t help but worry about similar occurrences at my own home. I simply can’t afford to take any chances when it comes to safety, especially since I have young children in the house. That’s why I recently purchased a DVR security system.

This DVR security system is a high-tech state-of-the-art method of monitoring both the interior and exterior of my home. The package I bought included four cameras, so I decided to set one up at the front of my property, one in the rear, and two inside the house. I fiddled with camera placement for a long time, and decided that the current locations give me the best coverage. It’s not complete by any means, but someone would have a hard time remaining undetected while on my land.

The reason I chose to buy a DVR security system over a cheaper one is the way that I’m able to monitor the feed from all four cameras from wherever I am. All it takes is an Internet connection and some special software that was included in the box in order for me to accomplish this. That means that as long as I have my laptop with me, I can see exactly what’s happening on my property at any time of the day or night. This is perfect for when I’m on business trips or extended vacations, or when I’ve left my kids with a sitter. In fact, I have to say that my new DVR security system has already paid for itself in terms of the peace of mind I’ve had since installing it!

Another great feature of my DVR security system is that it doesn’t require tapes of any kind. The unit came with a 160GB hard drive, which is enough capacity to store nearly 150 days of continuous footage. That’s simply amazing, if you ask me! Plus, since all the data is digitized, it’s easy to download and transfer video snippets to my computer for safekeeping. Scanning through the digital footage is a breeze as well, particularly with the date and time search functions on the DVR security system.

If you are worried about being able to monitor and protect your home or business, then I recommend getting a DVR security system. These products are relatively affordable, easy to install and use, and are always accessible via the Internet. Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that you can check in on your property and your family any time you feel like it? It’s the next best thing to having a live guard on the premises!

Flea Markets

Flea Markets

My family was a little bit odd. On Sundays, we didn’t go to the park. We didn’t go for out for a movie, or even for a Sunday drive. What we did was visit antique flea markets. Both my mother and my father were connoisseurs of the antique. Although they never opened an antique market of their own, they probably could have written a guidebook to all of the flea markets around the state. As a matter of fact, when we took a beach vacation one summer, it was difficult to even make it to the beach. All they wanted to do was hang out in the flea market all day and check out antiques.

I do have to admit that these flea markets were a great place to let my imagination run wild. Basically, they were filled with strange old people selling strange old goods. There were old trading cards, photographs from the 50s and before, antique rifles, pieces of Confederate uniforms, and many many old and dusty antique lamps. Some of the stuff was pretty golden, while much of it was pretty faded. Every once in a while, you could even find a working antique musical instrument. One day, for example, I found an accordion in great shape. I talked my dad into buying it for me, and I started playing. It was actually the beginning of a lifelong love of the instrument.

Still, I guess what I liked most about flea markets wasn’t the old stuff so much as the old people. I never had a grandfather or grandmother growing up, so it was nice to be able to talk to all of these old swap meet fanatics about this and that. A lot of them collected and sold just one thing, and could tell you anything about it. One guy would go on for hours and hours about old racing bugles if you let him. He played basically anything shaped like a horn, and every once in a while would take a walk outside to blow one of his trumpets.

We actually got to be good friends with some of the people at the flea markets. We would see them every week, and there was always plenty of time to talk. Although my memories are fond ones, at the time it seemed to take too long. That is why I would pass the time having conversations with interesting old folks. As fascinating as their wares were, their life stories were even better.

Meaning Of Words

Meaning Of Words

There is a popular attitude in this country among a certain misinformed segment of the population that the meaning of words is somehow fixed in stone. It is just amazing how many people believe this. People act as if words have one single definition which has always been will never change until the end of time as we know it. In reality, however, the meanings of words are highly malleable. Meaning changes depending on who is saying the words, what day it is, what situation they are in, and any one of hundreds of other factors.

I think I sensed this when I was a kid. My parents were very into training us to be resourceful children, so when we would ask for the meaning of words, they would have us look them up. Looking up words in the dictionary as a child was initially confusing to me. A lot of the time, the meaning of a word as it was explained in the dictionary didn’t quite match up with the book I was reading. Slowly but surely, I began to realize that the explanations of meaning were only approximate. They worked in some cases, but did not work in others.

As a linguist, I have dedicated my life to the meaning of words. I’m fascinated by definitions and the way they shift based on different cultures and subcultures. If you take a word like liberal, terrorist, freedom, faith, enemy, or anyone of thousands of politically contested words, you can see how people intentionally distort meaning to serve their purposes. The problem is that many people never really think about the meaning of words. They don’t understand that the language we use is intentionally manipulated behind the scenes, because they don’t understand that language is malleable. I find this endlessly frustrating.

Still, I am somewhat reassured by the fact that, for many children, an understanding of the meaning of words is a simple as opening up a dictionary. A love of language can start in early childhood, and can last a lifetime. This is why I’m careful to always get dictionaries for all of my young relatives. I may not be remembered as that cool uncle who got them a video game, but I might inspire something far more precious and ultimately more enjoyable than a few hours of gaming: I might inspire a lifetime of learning. And in my opinion, that’s one of the most precious things you can give.
